Oklahoma court rejects ultrasound abortion law

OKLAHOMA CITY ? An Oklahoma judge has permanently blocked a state law that requires women seeking abortions to have an ultrasound and listen to a detailed description of the fetus before the procedure.

District Judge Brian Dixon handed down an order Wednesday ruling that the law is unconstitutional and unenforceable. The order says the statute passed in 2010 is an unconstitutional special law because it addresses only patients and physicians concerning abortions and not other medical care.

Enforcement of the law had been blocked since shortly after Nova Health Systems, operator of Reproductive Services of Tulsa, challenged its constitutionality in May 2010. It would have forced a woman seeking an abortion to undergo an ultrasound, have the image placed in front of her and then hear it described in detail.

It was unclear whether?an appeal would be filed.

The author of the ultrasound statute, Rep. Lisa Billy, R-Lindsay, said she was disappointed with the ruling.

"I think women deserve to have all the information necessary before making that decision," Billy said.

Here's how abortion measures are faring in other states:

Arizona
A controversial bill that proposes to ban most abortions performed after 20 weeks of pregnancy moved closer to becoming law in the Republican-controlled state Legislature after clearing the state Senate.

The bill, which would still allow abortions after 20 weeks in the case of medical emergency, was passed by a mostly party-line 20-10 vote in the Senate on Tuesday. Only a small number of abortions are performed in Arizona after 20 weeks.

State Rep. Kimberly Yee, a Republican who sponsored the bill, said she has the votes needed for the late-term abortion bill to pass the House and head to Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer to sign.?No vote has yet been scheduled, and Brewer, a Republican, has not indicated whether she would sign such a measure.

Idaho
The Republican-controlled Legislature this week backed away from a bill requiring women seeking an abortion to get an ultrasound first, capping weeks of contentious Capitol demonstrations and threats against at least one lawmaker.

The legislation passed the Senate, but stalled in the state House after Rep. Tom Loertscher, a Republican from Iona and?chairman of the House Affairs Committee,?said Tuesday that he wouldn't schedule a committee hearing.

Tennessee
A bill in the Tennessee Legislature that included the online publication of the names of doctors who perform abortions was withdrawn amid a flurry of controversy last week.

Also withdrawn was?a requirement?to post statistical information about women who undergo the abortions. Critics said it had the potential to inadvertently identify women who've had an abortion. The bill now says that doctors who perform abortions in the state must have hospital privileges in local hospitals.

Robert Bales charged with murder in Afghanistan massacre

Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales will be charged with 17 counts of murder after?going on a shooting rampage in two villages near his Southern Afghanistan military post in the early hours of March 11, a U.S. official said.

Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales will be charged with 17 counts of murder, assault and a string of other offenses in the massacre of Afghan villagers as they slept, a U.S. official said.

The charges signed against Bales include 17 counts of murder, six counts of attempted murder and six counts of aggravated assault as well as dereliction of duty and other violations of military law, the official said on condition of anonymity because the charges had not been announced.

The 38-year-old soldier and father of two who lives in Lake Tapps, Washington, is charged with going on a shooting rampage in two villages near his Southern Afghanistan military post in the early hours of March 11, gunning down nine Afghan children and eight adults and burning some of the victims' bodies.

The charges are to be read to Bales on Friday. He is being held in a military prison at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas and faces trial under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

The killings were yet another blow to U.S-Afghan relations, following a series of missteps, including the accidental burning of Qurans, which prompted violent protests and revenge killings American troops in the war zone.

The brutal shooting rampage also prompted renewed debate in the United States about health care for the troops, who have experienced record suicide rates and high rates of post-traumatic stress and brain injuries during repeated deployments over a decade of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Bales was on his fourth tour of duty, having served three tours in Iraq, where he suffered a head injury and a foot injury.

Bales' civilian attorney, John Henry Browne, has portrayed his client as a patriot, loving father and devoted husband who had been traumatized by a comrade's injury and sent into combat one too many times.

"I'm not putting the war on trial," Browne has said, "but the war is on trial." He added: "If I can help create a discussion about the war, that would be a great way for me to go out."

Army officials have said Bales was cleared for return to duty after his head injury.

Bales joined the Army in 2001 after a Florida investment business failed and after he had worked with a string of securities operations. Bales and a broker at one company were hit in 2003 with a $1.5 million arbitration ruling after an elderly couple charged that their holdings were decimated.

Now Keys and her producer husband Swizz Beatz have listed their Crosby Street penthouse for $17.95 million only two years after the couple bought the place from funk/soul/rocker Lenny Kravitz for $12.5 million.

Owner of former Sinatra home didn't stay long

Frank Sinatra owned this home during a low point during his career.

When Paramount Pictures chairman and CEO Brad Grey bought Frank Sinatra's former Los Angeles home in November 2010 for $18.5 million, the famous Hollywood producer had big plans to restore and renovate the brick ranch that sits on a parklike 2.3 acres.

Turns out that, in the end, the Sinatra house that inspired Grey's dreams was merely a nice set for Grey's wedding in April 2011 to his new wife, Cassandra. The wedding was called lavish, and attended by the likes of Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Lopez. The couple has since moved to Bel Air, making Grey's ownership stint a lot like Sinatra's.

"My client still owns (the Sinatra house) but I sold him another property. He didn't want to go through the process of renovating the house,'' said Stephen Shapiro, who holds the listing at Westside Estate Agency.

The property has been back on the market since September, when Grey listed the Holmby Hills residence for $23.5 million. After a price drop on March 15, the former Sinatra home at 320 N. Carolwood Drive was re-listed for its current list price of $19,995,000.

According to the Sinatra biography "The Voice,'' by James Kaplan, Sinatra bought the house in 1948 for $250,000 at a time when his career was at a low ebb. Sinatra had built a dream home in Palm Springs, and was strapped for cash and on the verge of divorce.

Mini Biography:

Lawrence Blume was named one of the "Ten Rising Stars of Comedy" by the Hollywood reporter for his first feature film, Martin & Orloff, which premiered at the 2002 US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen. The film has gone on to win the Chris Weztel Prize for Independent comedy from the Art Institute of Chicago, The Audience Award for Best Feature at the Lansing Film Festival, "Best of Fest" award at the Sarasota Film Festival, and was the headlining film at the Toyota NY Comedy Festival. Martin & Orloff is available on DVD through Anchor Bay Entertainment and on Comedy Central starting June 2006.

In addition to producing and directing Martin & Orloff, Lawrence Blume has directed two short dramatic films; "To Walk A City's Street", a science fiction thriller adapted from Clifford Simak's short story and "Otherwise Known As Sheila The Great" a Weekend Special for ABC Television. "To Walk A City's Street" makes its television premiere this year on the Sci-Fi channel. "Otherwise Known As Sheila The Great" won prizes at the USA film Festival, The Chicago Children's film festival, The New York Film and Television festival and top prize at the National Educational Film Festival.

Lawrence has also been a sound designer, film editor and was the founder/co-owner of PostWorks, one of New York's largest post-production companies. As a pioneer in non-linear editing he ran the post production center at the Sundance Filmmaker's Lab, worked as a consultant to Avid Technology and has taught editing at the Maine Film/TV workshops and Film/Video Arts in New York. Recently he has been lecturing on HDTV and Digital Cinema at NYU film school, Hampshire College and Franklin & Marshall College. He is currently writing and directing an adaptation of the off-Broadway play "Temporary Help" and producing and adaptation of the novel "Deenie" for Disney.

The bookseller is definitely planning to launch its tablet outside of the U.S. -- the company has confirmed as much, and the fact that they're here in London attests to that -- but after a developer event very light on details and developer tools, a room full of developers decided that a lot more work needs to be done before B&N will be able to make a credible entry into the market here. ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Pakistan's president lauded his government's commitment to democracy and boasted of gains in the country's war on militants in a Saturday speech to lawmakers, many of whom hurled abuse at his leadership before walking out in protest.

Asif Ali Zardari was making his fifth address as president to the joint session, something he claimed was an achievement in itself given the country's turbulent political history. Few would have predicted the coalition government he headed would last that long when it took office in 2008.

"The world can see the march of democracy goes on," he said. "We are creating history, while a lot more needs to be done. We Pakistanis can be proud of our young democracy."

The government, like others before it, has barely made a dent in the economic and social problems facing the country, which relies heavily on foreign aid to survive. Mismanagement and corruption have been the hallmarks of his administration, most independent analysts say.

Even before Zardari opened his mouth, opposition leaders began hurling abuse at the government, occasionally disrupting his speech. "Stop looting!" ''Stop lying!" and "Whoever is America's friend is a traitor!" they chanted for a quarter of an hour before leaving.

Since taking office, Pakistan has struggled to defeat Islamist militants that are based in the northwest close to the Afghan border and have significant support at various levels of society. The army has launched offensives against them, but Zardari's government has been accused of not speaking up clearly against extremism.

"We will continue to show force against them," he said. "I believe our efforts have born fruit."

The country's relations have faltered with the United States over the last year after a series of incidents that inflamed anti-U.S. sentiment among many Pakistanis. Last November, Islamabad all but severed ties after U.S. airstrikes killed 24 Pakistani soldiers along the Afghan border.

On Monday, a joint session of parliament will debate whether to re-engage with Washington.

Washington considers Pakistan's internal stability important to its plans to wind down its involvement in the Afghan war. The U.S. hopes for Islamabad's help in facilitating peace talks with the Taliban, whose leaders it says are based in Pakistani territory. The U.S. also relies upon supply lines running through Pakistan.

Pakistan has said it would fully back efforts aimed at bringing peace to Afghanistan, but is wary of being blamed if the peace process fails, as many consider likely.

"We fully support an Afghan-owned and Afghan-led peace process in Afghanistan," Zardari said.

"The year 2011 was a challenging year," he said. "We seek to engage meaningfully with the U.S. on the basis of mutual interest and mutual respect."

The government has been widely accused of mishandling the economy, which is growing around 4 percent a year, not enough to create jobs for school graduates and far slower then neighboring India. High inflation, electricity and gas shortages have hammered the poor and middle class over the last four years.

Zardari claimed otherwise in his speech, saying exports were up and growth was picking up.

General elections are scheduled for early next year, but there has been speculation they may take place after the summer.

Zardari is also caught in a power struggle with Pakistan's powerful military ? traditionally at odds with his Pakistan People's Party ? as well as with a Supreme Court angered at his perceived flaunting of judicial authority.

But while his government may yet be forced to face new elections by the collapse of its coalition or even by a court order, a repeat of the military coups that have brought down previous troubled civilian governments as recently as the late 1990s, when then-army chief Gen. Pervez Musharraf seized power, is considered unlikely.
