Neb. farmers begin planting corn as weather warms

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- Nebraska farmers have begun planting corn, but the U.S. Agriculture Department says they are behind schedule and dry soil remains a concern.

The weather warmed up enough last week to allow farmers to get back out in their fields. About 3 percent of the state's corn crop has now been planted, but typically 26 percent is planted at this stage.

The USDA estimates that only about 56 percent of the topsoil and 11 percent of the subsoil has adequate or surplus moisture. That will be a concern for the state's crops.

Only about 12 percent of Nebraska's wheat crop is in good or excellent condition.

And hay and forage supplies for livestock feed remain short. About 31 percent of the livestock producers have adequate or surplus hay and forage supplies.

Benchmark's Bill Gurley: ?Uber Is Growing Faster Than eBay Did?

TechCrunch Disrupt NY 2013 - Day 1Today at Disrupt NY 2013, Benchmark partner Bill Gurley shared an interesting fact about Uber. “Uber is growing faster than eBay did,” Gurley said. In 1997, Benchmark invested $6.7 million in eBay. It was worth more than $5 billion less than two years later. Benchmark is also an investor in Uber. “Uber is probably the fastest growing company that we?ve ever had,” Gurley said. He insisted a lot on the quality of the product. If a company builds a good product, it will grow organically. Benchmark took part in Uber’s Series A and Series B rounds of respectively $11 million and $37 million. Gurley seemed very satisfied with this investment and only had good things to say about the car company. “The product is so good, there is no one spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on marketing,” Gurley said. eBay and Uber are both consumer companies that have reached a lot of customers in a very short time. It contrasts a lot with his comments about the past failures of the tech industry. “On the consumer side, the risk is what there was in the late 1990s, with too much money spent on marketing,” Gurley said. A few days ago, New York finally decided that e-hail services would be able to operate in the city. Last year Uber launched UberX in New York, its e-hailing service on top of regular taxis. But the company had to kill its service because of legislation issues. Uber will now be able to enter the market again, with competition from Hailo, TaxiMagic and others. On Twitter, Uber investor Sherwin Pishevar added: I'd been hesitant to publicly say this re: @Uber but since @bgurley said it, I can confirm @Uber is fastest growing company I've ever seen.— Shervin Pishevar (@shervin) April 29, 2013 And check out the video of Gurley on stage below:

How They Filmed Return Of The Jedi's Absurdly Great Speeder Chase

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Return Of The Jedi, the Ewok-filled amazingness that spelled the end of the original Star Wars trilogy. That film contained one of the most amazing high-speed chases ever seen on film. This is how they brought that death defying chase to life.

One of the highlights of Return Of The Jedi is the speeder chase between the Rebels and the Empire. The Rebels need to distract the Scout Troopers in order to deactivate the shield generator. That would let the Rebel fleet penetrate the Death Star and defeat the Galactic Empire.

But you knew that already.

Luke and Leia jump on the speeders and then race through the forest at seriously crazy high speeds. There are tons of narrow misses and there was obviously no way to safely or realistically do this at those high speeds.

That's because it wasn't close to real. The natural assumption is the chase was filmed on a dirtbike and then the footage was sped up, but there's a problem with that: Dirtbikes aren't exactly the smoothest riding vehicles in the world. The speeders float on the air, which means they need to be way smoother than a motorcycle could ever be.

The solution was amazing. Cameras were operated at 3/4 of a frame per second as cameramen walked through Cheatham Grove, CA with steadicams. It sounds like it was back breaking work:

Just 100 more yards. My left hand is slippery with sweat. Legs tired. Brain hurts most of all. I wonder if really intense concentration produces any lingering harmful effects...look at Bobby Fisher! (At a camera speed of only 3/4 frame per second, a thousand feet of precise walking gets you just 16 feet of VistaVision in the can, and every take you forget a few more important phone numbers, or a family birthday.) Is it worth it? At this rate I will be illiterate in a week and a vegetable in two.

Not only was cameraman Garrett Brown wearing the steadicam, he also had two gyroscopes attached to it for extra stabilization, although a slight amount of wobble was still wanted to make it semi-realistic. He also had to concentrate on the target like a sniper. One misstep would mean a ruined take and another slow trudge through the forest. At 3/4 speed, Brown says that 1,000 feet of walking got him 16 usable feet of footage.

Brown was personally skeptical on the idea when it was presented to him. But instead of saying no, he decided to go for it. What resulted was walking with pounds of equipment slowly through the forest, where a slight error would cause him to start over again and again and again.

The 3/4 speed footage was sped up 30 times in order to make the film the standard 24 frames per seconds. That also made the speed become a mind-boggling 120 MPH through the forest. Brown had to repeatedly walk through the forest in order to get the right shots. Filming at a slow speed like that also didn't let them calculate for exposure, but it seems that their guesswork was spot on and corrections done in post made for a great looking scene.

Was the agony of walking through the forest super slowly and making hundreds of cuts to get a three minute chase worth it? Damn right it was.

Barkley flies to Philly

If he had been the 10th pick in last year?s draft, which is right about where Matt Barkley was projected, he would have been guaranteed about $12.08 million.

As the first pick in the fourth round, he?ll get about $495,000 guaranteed.

So the decision to return to USC for his senior year may have cost Barkley more than $11 million.

Barkley just shrugs it off.

?I've stayed positive this whole time,? he said Saturday. ?I haven't looked back. All it takes is one team. [I'm] blessed that the Eagles believe in me and are willing to give me a chance. I'm looking forward from here on out.

?No matter where you end up, it?s just the beginning of the next chapter of your life. It?s the same with me. I?m just looking ahead.?

The Eagles traded up three picks from 101 overall to 98 ? past Andy Reid and the Chiefs, who had targeted Barkley ? and selected the USC quarterback with the first pick in the fourth round of the draft Saturday.

Barkley joins a crowded quarterback stable that also includes Michael Vick, the starter for most of the past three years, and Nick Foles, the starter the second half of last year, along with Dennis Dixon and G.J. Kinne.

General manager Howie Roseman and Kelly didn?t go into the draft thinking quarterback, but they felt Barkley was too good to pass up.

?We had Matt rated in the top 50 players in the draft,? Kelly said. ?We talked all along about how we were going to take value, and there was no better value than for us to open up today with than taking Matt.

?He?s the all-time leading passer in USC history, one of the all-time great QBs to play in that league, he was a four-year starter in high school, a four-year starter in college. He has all the intangibles you?re looking at.?

But he?s also coming off a disappointing season.

Barkley was brilliant in 2011, with 39 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He completed 69 percent of his passes and threw for 3,528 yards and finished sixth in the Heisman Trophy balloting, third among quarterbacks after Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck.

He was that good.

But he returned to USC for his senior year, and although he wasn?t terrible, he wasn?t nearly as good as in 2012.

Completion percentage dropped to 63.6 percent. He still had 36 touchdowns, but his interception total more than doubled to 15. He hurt his shoulder in a game against UCLA and missed USC?s Sun Bowl loss to Georgia Tech.

The NFL noticed. He was bypassed in the first round. In the second round. In the third round.

Why?

"I'm not too sure,? Barkley said. ?It wasn't my decision to make that call. I'm just excited to be an Eagle.?

Forget questions about his arm strength, forget questions about his health, forget questions about his decline in production.

The Eagles wanted Barkley.

?I can?t speak what other people saw in him,? Kelly said. ?It wasn?t like I think he had a bad year, he just ended up getting hurt in the UCLA game.

?I think some people evaluate him a little different, but if you go to the film and the body of work, he?s had an outstanding career.?

Barkley set 20 USC passing records and 10 Pac-12 passing marks during his career with the Trojans.

He?s the Pac-12 record holder for total offense (12,214 yards, 23rd-most in NCAA history), passing yards (12,327, 19th-most in NCAA history) and touchdown passes (116, seventh-most in NCAA history).

He?s the only player in Pac-12 history with four seasons of 2,500 yards of total offense.

And he won. Barkley was 34-13 as a starting quarterback in college and threw at least one touchdown in 42 of those 47 games.

?The first time I saw Matt Barkley, he was a true freshman, and he came into Autzen Stadium [in Eugene], which is one of the toughest places to play in the world, and it didn?t phase him a bit,? Kelly said.
?
?Matt Barkley was never a freshman. There was just a poise about him. There was a calm about him. Those intangible qualities that you really look for.

?He?s a competitor. He?s been in big games all through high school, all through college, he?s handled everything the right way.

?Just talking to him on the phone when we drafted him. A lot of people, you can say what?s their attitude going to be like? He was like, ?It?s a dream come true.? Loved competing against him, and we?re real excited to have him now.?

Kelly said Barkley?s performances in his four games against Oregon were a big part of his evaluation of the 6-foot-3, 230-pounder.

Barkley threw for 1,258 yards ? 315 per game ? with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions in four games against the Ducks, putting up an average of 35 points per game. Last year, he passed for 484 yards and five TDs in that 62-51 game.

?It was a shootout,? Kelly said. ?We were scoring a lot of points, but Matt didn?t play defense.

?It was kind of like an Arena League game. It was Philadelphia Soul vs. the Orlando Predators. It was just a back-and-forth. We got up, and they answered and we answered back and then it got within three and then we went down and scored, and they would go back down the field and score.

?I?ve seen his skill set up close and personal four times, and he?s answered the ball every time. ? He was great when he was a true freshman at our place. He played really good when we were down at the Coliseum two years ago. He played great this year.?

Barkley said he got a few prank calls Friday night from people telling him he?d been drafted.

When the call came soon after noon Saturday, it was the real thing.

?It was good to hear a man?s voice who said, ?Do you want to be an Eagle?? he said.

?It was comforting and it was a sigh of relief and a new beginning. There are a lot of emotions, but excitement is probably at the top of the list.

?I can?t wait to prove myself and show that I do have a strong arm, and I am capable of playing in this league and playing strong. Just give me a shot, and I can?t wait to see where this leads.?

Green Consumer: Product Review Roundup Spring 2013 | Care2 ...

Ok, I know I wrote all about being a non-consumer for Earth Day . . . And I did celebrate Earth Day this year as I have for many years, by unplugging (mostly), not buying anything, cooking nourishing meals, and getting outside as much as possible. It is always a great time to sort out my priorities, and I usually find a bit more balance between my ideals as a green diva and the reality of the world I try to live in harmony with.?Let?s face it, this is what makes me a green diva!

I strive to be more conscious about everything I do and the potential impact it has on me, my family, my community, animals and ultimately the earth. Seems lofty, right? Well, thankfully I don?t have to live off the grid and make everything by hand, which is an awesome concept, but probably not realistic for me at this time. There are companies making progress in providing healthier, more sustainably manufactured products that keep people and planet higher on the priority list.

We get offered products to review EVERY day ? some rather large and expensive things like cars, which are fun reviews, but most are practical, every-day things. We have gotten backed up with a nice bounty of great things we chose to review and play with, and finally spent some time focusing on most of them. We decided to dedicate a show to sharing about our favorites, and well, we just didn?t have enough time, so there is another roundup coming soon!

Important note: we are never compensated for the reviews, and we only review products that we like and want to recommend.?So, while we don?t get paid cash, we do have a lot of fun and hope to offer some good ideas for our listeners to try new healthy products that are good for us and better for the environment.

I will list some of the products from this week?s review show, but to see the full post by our awesome intern GD Jamie (this was her last show and we will definitely miss her ? great job, we love you Jamie)

but for ALL the fun details and witty commentary, please listen to the?Green Divas big review podcast!

'Project Runway' winner discusses Daniel feud

Lifetime

Michelle Lesniak Franklin, the winner of "Project Runway."

By Drusilla Moorhouse, TODAY contributor

Michelle Lesniak Franklin got her last kill on "Project Runway." The "lone wolf" was crowned the winner of the team-themed 11th season, besting fellow finalists Stanley Hudson and Patricia Michaels with a nearly flawless collection inspired by her experience struggling to survive on the competition.

"It was the strangest experience ever," the scrappy Portland-based designer told TODAY.com. "It really is a Petri dish, and you learn so much about yourself over the course of time."

Stanley, unfortunately, didn't learn from his "time management issues" and barely managed to dress his models minutes before the show. "He's so incredibly talented," said Michelle. "It kind of fell apart for him at the end." ?

While Stanley and Patricia were frantic in the workroom, Michelle had time to relax and enjoy her completed collection.

"I just really like to be prepared and always put my best foot forward," she said. "Not that the other designers didn't take this seriously, but perhaps I took the weight of the seriousness heavier than they did. I was just really smart about it. It's 'Project Runway' -- they can throw three more challenges (at contestants) in one day, so I wanted to be prepared for that."

She was also prepared to hear criticism from the judges for her graphic bleeding heart sweater, which Tim Gunn loathed and begged her to remove from her collection. Instead, the judges all loved it -- so did she make the mentor eat crow? ??

"When we were watching the runway backstage on the television, and it walked down the runway, he was like, 'I totally take back what I said,'" she recounted. "He's like, 'It's stunning!'"

She also got sweet revenge after the judges bashed her design for the Miranda Lambert challenge.

"The one judge comment you dread to hear is 'I question their taste,' -- and they 'questioned my taste' (when critiquing) my leather vest and this leather fringe necklace," Michelle shared, adding: "H&M just made that necklace! So yeah, that was funny to me."

Michelle herself brought plenty of funny to the show, from her spot-on Nina Garcia impressions to her candid remarks about her fellow contestants.

"Sometimes it came across as mean," she said with some regret. "I know at one point I said that Tu couldn?t sew for s---. Well, that dress he did was terrible, but Tu is actually an incredible sewer. And an incredible technician. I ended up apologizing for that."

"I think a few people had hurt feelings, and for the most part I was really straightforward with them," she continued. "I'd tell them before (the 'confessional' interviews) even aired: ?'Hey guys this is what I said. And this is what I meant by it.'"

Not everyone has been forgiving, though -- especially Daniel.

"When someone takes a ball from you in kindergarten, you go to first grade (and) you need to let go of it," she said, referring to the emotional mustachioed designer's overreaction to her comment about his pink jacket. "You need to not hold a grudge and get over it."

Michelle promised more fireworks when the gang reunites in next week's reunion special.

"There are some adults, designers on this show, who haven't quite figured out how to grow up," she said.

Do you think Michelle deserved to win "Project Runway"? Tell us on our Facebook page!

Judge won't block SEC use of recording against Goldman's Tourre

    By Nate Raymond

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Three years after Fabrice Tourre became the face of a major U.S. regulatory action against Goldman Sachs Group Inc, a newly uncovered phone recording is giving the Securities and Exchange Commission ammunition in its fraud case against the former bond trader.

The January 2007 call was between a Goldman saleswoman and an executive at ACA Financial Guaranty Corp, which helped pick securities backing the collateralized debt obligation about which Goldman and Tourre allegedly misled investors.

As Tourre looked on, U.S. District Judge Katherine Forrest at a Friday hearing in Manhattan federal court denied his bid to keep the recording from being admitted at his upcoming trial, scheduled for July 15.

In a lawsuit filed in April 2010, the SEC accused Tourre and Goldman of defrauding investors in a CDO called Abacus 2007-AC1.

The agency said Tourre and the bank did not disclose that a hedge fund run by billionaire John Paulson helped pick and subsequently bet against the underlying securities.

Tourre gained particular notoriety for having referred to himself at one point in the process as "fabulous Fab," and has testified before Congress.

He has denied wrongdoing and is contesting the SEC's claims. Goldman, in contrast, settled for $550 million in July 2010, without admitting wrongdoing.

On the recording, Goldman saleswoman Gail Kreitman is heard telling ACA employee Lucas Westreich that Goldman was "placing a hundred percent of the equity" with Paulson & Co Inc. Kreitman has not been charged with wrongdoing.

The SEC wants to use the call to support its claims that Tourre tricked ACA into believing Paulson had a long investment in the CDO when the hedge fund instead planned to bet against it.

"This is clear evidence that ACA was told, 'They're taking equity,'" Christian Schultz, an SEC lawyer, said at the hearing.

The recording of the call emerged in December 2012 amid litigation between Goldman and ACA over the CDO.

Tourre's lawyers contend the audio file shouldn't be admitted, saying the SEC improperly failed to disclose telephone logs that would have revealed ACA had recordings like this and others that could be evidence.

"That's the penalty they should pay for conducting an improper investigation and not getting it," said Pamela Chepiga, a partner at Allen & Overy representing Tourre.

In allowing the SEC to seek to admit the recording at trial, Forrest on Friday expressed frustration with the agency, saying she thought this "could have been handled differently.

"This is a mistake," Forrest said. "But we're going to move beyond it."

She said Tourre's lawyers could conduct further discovery and depositions related to the recording. She also asked the SEC to report by Wednesday the scope of other tapes existing related to Tourre's case.

Neither Chepiga nor a spokesman for the SEC responded to requests for further comment after the hearing.

Goldman had no immediate comment, and representatives for ACA and Paulson did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The case is SEC v Goldman Sachs & Co et al, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 10-03229.

Marshall Monitor headphones available now for $200, we go earson

When you've got legitimate rock-sound credentials, why wouldn't you make headphones? Right? To that end, Marshall is back with a new pair -- called Monitor -- to sit at the top of its existing range. Players in the current market seem to have found the sweet spot between premium pricing and street credibility, and there's no change here. Priced at $200, Marshall is putting the Monitor directly up against these other sets that mix style-consciousness with claims of quality audio. It's not all about looks though, as the Monitor sports a proprietary "F.T.F" (Felt Treble Filter) system that lets you change the sound for a different high-end response. Under the hood is a 40MM driver, and the same gold, black and leather stylings we saw on the Major model. This time, however, Marshall opted for an over-ear fit, and threw in a few other goodies too. These include the increasingly popular 3.5mm pass-through jack (so friends can plug in and share your music), a collapsible design, a detachable part-coiled cable and in-line remote. The Monitor is available starting today for the aforementioned $200. But, if you want to know a little more, we got our hands on a set, so rock past the break for our impressions.

Google Transparency Report shows censorship spike, details takedown requests

Governments are getting nosier than ever, at least if you ask Google. The search firm has already noticed rapidly mounting censorship in recent months, but its latest half-year Transparency Report has revealed a 26 percent surge in takedown requests toward the end of 2012 -- at 2,285 total, more than twice as many as in 2009. Much of the jump can be attributed to Brazil, whose municipal election triggered a rush of anti-defamation requests from candidates, as well as a Russian blacklisting law that allows for trial-free website takedowns.

Whether or not the heat dies down in 2013, we'll have a better sense of just what happens when a YouTube request comes down the pipe. From now on, Google will say whether government-based demands to remove videos were based on YouTube's Community Guidelines or were directly linked to regional laws. Google isn't any more inclined to comply with such requests -- it argues those Brazilian clips are free speech, for example -- but we'll have a better sense of just how easy it is for the company to say no.

Napolitano Hearing Points the Way Forward on Immigration Reform ...

napolitanoAt an April 23rd hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano delivered two messages on behalf of the Obama administration. First, the administration strongly supports the Senate immigration reform bill?S.744, ?The Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act.? Secondly, the administration has, contrary to the claims of its critics, significantly ramped up border security in particular and immigration enforcement in general. In other words, the administration has proven that it can be tough on enforcement even as it advocates the formulation of new immigration laws that are more effective and just than those currently on the books.

Napolitano was the sole witness at the hearing, during which she succinctly summarized, and praised, the multi-faceted and comprehensive nature of the Senate bill. As she testified:

?The bill would continue to strengthen security at our borders and hold employers more accountable if they knowingly hire undocumented workers. It would provide a pathway to earned citizenship for the 11 million individuals who are already in this country illegally. It would also modernize our legal immigration system, allowing families to be reunited in a humane and timely manner and grow our economy by attracting the highly-skilled entrepreneurs and workers who will help create good paying jobs.?

More precisely, she stood behind four principles embodied in the Senate bill and the White House?s stance on immigration reform:

    • Stronger Border Security: The Obama administration has already increased the numbers of Border Patrol agents and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers, as well as investing in more surveillance technology. The Senate bill would continue with this upward trend.
    • Mandatory E-Verify: The Senate bill proposes, and the White House supports, the creation of a mandatory, nationwide system of electronic employee verification (E-Verify), in a drive to create a legal workforce.
    • Earned Legalization with a Path to Citizenship: The bill and the administration call for the creation of ?a mechanism to bring the millions of undocumented immigrants unlawfully present in the United States out of the shadows and into a legal, regulated pathway to earned citizenship.?
    • Streamlining Legal Immigration: The bill and the White House advocate improving channels for legal immigration to the United States in myriad ways, such as ?updating rules to keep immigrant families together? and drawing more highly skilled immigrants into the U.S. labor force.

The bill was not immune to criticism, however. In his opening statement, for instance, Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) supported the bill, but also drew attention to some of its weaknesses:

?I am concerned, however, that what some are calling ?triggers? could long delay green cards for those who we want to make full and contributing participants in our society. I do not want people to move out of the shadows only to be stuck in some underclass. Just as we should not fault ?dreamers? who were brought here as children, we should not make people?s fates and future status depend on border enforcement conditions over which they have no control. And I am disappointed that the legislation does not treat all American families equally. We must end the discrimination that gay and lesbian families face in our immigration law. I also am concerned about changes to the visa system for siblings and the lack of clarity about how the new point-based visa system will work in practice. And I question whether spending billions more on a fence between the United States and Mexico is really the best use of taxpayer dollars.?

Some members of the committee had knee-jerk emotional reactions to Napolitano?s testimony that were rather devoid of substance. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) announced that he simply didn?t agree with her on matters of border security, while Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) announced that he didn?t believe she had time to read the whole bill. These vague critiques notwithstanding, the hearing reflected a high degree of agreement between the White House and the Gang of Eight on the contours of immigration reform. As Napolitano and Leahy both emphasized, the time for immigration reform is long overdue.

Huge elephant bird egg gets $101,813 at UK auction

LONDON (AP) ? A massive, partly fossilized egg laid by a now-extinct elephant bird has sold for more than double its estimate at a London auction.

Christie's auction house said Wednesday that the foot-long, nearly nine-inches in diameter egg fetched 66,675 pounds ($101,813). It had been valued at 20,000 to 30,000 pounds pre-sale, and was sold to an anonymous buyer over the telephone after about 10 minutes of competitive bidding.

Elephant birds were wiped out several hundred years ago. The oversized ovum, laid on the island of Madagascar, is believed to date back before the 17th century.

Flightless, fruit-gobbling elephant birds resembled giant ostriches and could grow to be 11 feet high (3.4 meters). Christie's says their eggs are 100 times the size of an average chicken's.

Adoption at the Movies : Mr. Monk and Foster Care Adoption

Adrian Monk is a savant. A brilliantly observant detective, he is called by the San Francisco Police Department to assist in bizarre and difficult investigations. He is a former police detective. He struggled with obsessive compulsions for much of his life, and after his wife was murdered he became unable to satisfactorily control them. He lives alone, and his personal nurse is his main companion. The television series, Monk, ran from 2002-2009 and blended mystery, dark humor, and believably-acted characters to create an enjoyable show.
In the episode ?Mr. Monk and the Kid,? a foster mother takes her five kids to a park. Two-year-old Tommy Grazer wanders off, and is found fifteen minutes later holding a severed, adult human finger. Monk is called to help the police figure out what happened, and he is introduced to Tommy. Monk takes Tommy on a walk, hoping that Tommy will retrace his steps and lead Monk to clues. While walking together, Monk and Tommy bond. A social worker informs the foster mother that Tommy will be removed pending a routine investigation, but confides to Monk that she is having difficulty finding an emergency home for him. ?The episode (Season 3 Episode 16) is available for instant streaming on Netflix and (for free) on Hulu. How is This Relevant to Foster Care / Adoption? Monk feels a strong connection to Tommy, largely because Tommy keeps saying ?Monk.?? He offers that Tommy can live with him. The social worker quickly agrees, and Tommy immediately goes to live with Monk. Monk finds that he loves Tommy and hopes that Tommy will love him. He says that he will never let Tommy go; later, however, he admits that he cannot even care for himself. He allows Tommy to be placed with another family. Single parenthood is affirmed as a difficult but rewarding task. Monk asserts that he would do anything for Tommy ? even die for him ? because he considers him to be his son, even though they?ve only recently met. Monk?s quick, unconditional (and ultimately unselfish) love for Tommy is a positive characteristic for any foster parent to emulate. Monk?s rapid acceptance of Tommy is a good thing; Tommy?s rapid acceptance of Monk is a bit problematic. Tommy is an exceptionally friendly toddler who quickly feels comfortable with police officers, Monk?s assistant, a social worker, and ultimately Monk. While Monk was flattered and touched that Tommy took to him so quickly, Tommy?s indiscriminate, rapid attachment seems reflective of Reactive Attachment Disorder, and should probably be explored rather than celebrated. Monk?s motives in taking in Tommy appear to be mixed. He cares for Tommy, quickly considers him a son, and is eager to meet his needs. However, Monk has been emotionally isolated for many years, and seems to depend on Tommy for emotional support and validation. This isn?t uncommon, but it is an unhealthily large burden to place on any toddler. The social worker in the story is basically negligent. She places Tommy in Monk?s home without having Monk undergo any home study or background check. She fails to notice that Monk does not even have a bed for Tommy, and she ignores obvious clues that should have suggested that Monk wasn?t quite ready to care for a child (for example, Monk seems surprised that Tommy eats the same food Monk eats, and seems surprised that a toddler is ?a person.?) ** BIG SPOILER ALERT ** The foster parents are money-hungry villains; the severed finger belonged to a violinist who they kidnapped for ransom. He is discovered in their garage, and the foster parents are arrested. It can be interesting to see foster care and adoption themes in unexpected places. I usually enjoy Monk, but was bothered by the inaccuracies in this episode. I wouldn?t recommend this for kids; children who have had abusive foster parents might be triggered by the episode, and children who have good foster parents might be introduced to an unhelpful stereotype. Parents watching the episode might resonate with the thought that they would do anything for a child they love ? even if they?ve met that child only recently.

US child porn suspect captured after 5 years

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Investigators say Eric Justin Toth's five-year run as a fugitive began when he was fired from his teaching job at a prestigious private school in Washington after being confronted about images of child pornography taken with a school camera in the man's possession.

It ended over the weekend when Nicaraguan authorities, acting on a tip, found him living in that Central American country ? with phony passports, driver's licenses and credit cards, authorities said. The FBI is investigating why Toth was living there and has previously said he may have been advertising as a nanny or tutor while on the lam.

Now, investigators are trying to piece together how he avoided capture even after he was added to the FBI's Most Wanted list, a notorious designation reserved for those considered dangerous criminals and that has featured the likes of Osama bin Laden and Whitey Bulger. Prosecutors are encouraging any other abuse victims to come forward as they proceed with a federal child pornography case against the 31-year-old Toth, who was ordered held without bond during a brief court appearance Tuesday.

"The fact that he is a known child predator and that he's been on the run for five years, we assume that there's potentially other victims in other places that he's been over the past five years," said Valerie Parlave, the head of the FBI's Washington field office.

A federal public defender assigned to Toth didn't immediately return a call seeking comment. Phone listings for possible relatives of Toth either declined to comment or did not return phone messages.

The arrest on Saturday, in a city near Nicaragua's border with Honduras, ended a frustrating international manhunt for the computer-savvy third-grade teacher and former camp counselor.

There were tantalizing clues along the way ? a fake suicide note in Minnesota, an apparent sighting at a shelter in Arizona, a tip that led agents on an extensive search of South America. Yet Toth continued to elude authorities, even as pictures of his bespectacled and sometimes bearded face were featured on news programs, billboards around the country and the FBI's list.

The big break came from a tip last week after a female tourist who encountered Toth in a social setting recognized him and contacted authorities, said FBI spokeswoman Jacqueline Maguire.

Toth first arrived in Nicaragua in October and appeared to have spent at least part of his time there creating false identities and ID documents, police said. When his house was raided, police found passports, driver's licenses and credit cards from three banks, under different names, suggesting he was preparing new false identities to use, said national Police Chief Aminta Granera. Toth was living under an assumed name, authorities said, and the FBI used records of a recent purchase to pinpoint his whereabouts.

Federal prosecutors unsealed a criminal complaint Tuesday charging Toth with possessing and producing child pornography, charges that together carry a maximum 50-year prison sentence. Toth wore a blue jail jumpsuit, his hair considerably longer than in the photographs the FBI had made public, and he spoke softly in response to a judge's perfunctory questions.

Prosecutors revealed no new details of their case in court. But according to the complaint, multiple images of child pornography ? including one video in which Toth allegedly appeared alongside an undressed young boy ? were located in June 2008 on a media card found inside his classroom at Beauvoir, a private elementary school on the grounds of the Washington National Cathedral.

Although "not the most socially adept guy," he was an engaged teacher who helped students think outside the box in math and logic and who even incorporated lessons on why people do or don't do the right things, recalled Michele Booth Cole, whose daughter was in one of Toth's classes.

"He wasn't teaching from the textbook. It was really much more creative and thought-provoking for the kids," said Cole, executive director of Safe Shores ? the DC Children's Advocacy Center, which helps abused children.

The media card with the pornographic images was found in in a box addressed to Toth at the school's address, the complaint says. Although some of the images showed children laughing and playing, others were every parent's nightmare, said Ron Machen, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.

Those include photographs and videos showing the hand of an adult male fondling a boy, the complaint says. Another video, taken in what appears to be a classroom at the school, shows a man investigators believe to be Toth with an undressed prepubescent boy.

Toth was fired after the images were discovered by fellow school employees and escorted from the school. He disappeared immediately, long before anyone could arrest him.

But there were soon clues that would set agents in motion.

His car was found later that summer in a long-term parking lot at the Minneapolis airport along with a fake suicide note inside that claimed he was going to kill himself in a nearby lake. But no body was found, and investigators concluded it was a ruse.

"Clearly he was trying to throw investigators off at that point," said FBI Special Agent Kyle Loven, an agency spokesman in Minneapolis.

He was believed to have been sighted in Phoenix in 2009, apparently working as a quasi-counselor at a shelter under an assumed name, the FBI has said. He was gone before agents could get to him.

Authorities also believe Toth, who is from the Midwest, traveled while on the run to Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

In April 2012, the FBI, concerned that the trail was going cold and that Toth's experience in interacting with children and earning their trust might be putting other kids at risk, announced that it was adding him to the bureau's Most Wanted fugitives list, where he filled a slot left vacant by the death of bin Laden.

Ron Hosko, then the special agent in charge of the criminal division of the FBI's Washington field office, said at the time, "This is a dangerous person because of his nature, because he is a child predator, because of his ability to groom both adults and potentially these children to develop some sorts of bond of trust."

The ASUS CUBE with Google TV review

    ASUS CUBE

A bold design and great software additions make the ASUS CUBE unique, but is that enough to push Google TV to mainstream living rooms?

The ASUS CUBE with Google TV is the latest premium Google TV box to come out, and it’s also one of the most anticipated. It has a unique look and design, a nifty rotating-cube user interface, and plenty of features both in the hardware and software. We’ve been waiting for it since it was first unveiled in January at CES, and now it’s here.

I’m convinced that the Google TV platform is “almost there”, and one key component to get it from a cool toy for enthusiasts to something you would find in a mainstream consumer’s living room is great hardware. The $140 price tag will help -- you can grab one from various e-tailers including Newegg -- will help provided the unit provides a good experience with the current Google TV software.

The ASUS CUBE is certainly unique, but is it great? Hit the break and we’ll have a look.
