Canada police reopen investigation of alleged rape

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia (AP) ? Authorities have received new information and are reopening the case of a teen girl who hanged herself after she was allegedly raped and bullied for months, the Royal Canadian Mountain Police said Friday.

The police force's Nova Scotia office said it had received credible information in the case of 17-year-old Rehtaeh Parsons, whose family said she was photographed while being sexually assaulted in 2011 and then bullied after the photo was shared on the Web and went viral.

The death of Parsons on Sunday has been linked to similar cases in the United States.

Police concluded there were no grounds to charge anyone after an initial year-long investigation.

The RCMP in Halifax now say a person who provided new information is willing to verify who the suspects are and cooperate with investigators, who have come under public criticism in their handling of the case. Police said the information did not come from an online source.

The Nova Scotia government came under criticism after Justice Minister Ross Landry initially ruled out the possibility of reviewing how the RCMP handled allegations that Parsons was sexually assaulted in November 2011.

Landry changed course, saying this week he had asked senior officials for options to review how the Mounties and the Public Prosecution Service concluded they could not file charges.

A group reported to be the cyber-activist hackers Anonymous said it would avenge the teen's death. In a public statement released online Thursday, the group criticized officials involved in the investigation of the alleged rape and bullying and said it was in the process of confirming the identities of the accused rapists.

Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter said the teen's family asked him to publicly denounce violence as a means of retribution against bullying.

Leah Parsons said her daughter hanged herself last week. Parsons said one boy took a photo of the alleged assault and her daughter was subjected to bullying after it went viral.
