House rejects debt limit hike in protest vote (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The House of Representatives voted to reject a $1.2 trillion increase in the federal debt limit on Wednesday in a largely symbolic vote aimed at staking out election-year positions on government spending.

The House voted 239 to 176 along party lines in favor of a "resolution of disapproval" against the increase sought by President Barack Obama, but the the winning tally was far short of the number needed to override an Obama veto.

Lawmakers had given Obama the authority to raise the debt limit last August as part of budget control legislation that ended a dramatic impasse over the borrowing cap that brought the United States to the brink of default and cost it its coveted top-tier credit rating.

Quinton Jackson reacts to positive steroid test from ?King Mo?

It was just two weeks ago that Muhammed Lawal was calling Quinton Jackson washed up and a B-level actor.

Jackson didn't say too much since, but he did sit down for an interview yesterday which happened to be perfectly timed with the news released by the Nevada State Athletic Commission that "King Mo" tested positive for an anabolic steroid following his Strikeforce fight.

"I feel that any fighter who has to use steroids to go in the cage and fight somebody is not a true fighter somebody just blatantly taking anabolical steroids to get in the cage is a sad case," said Jackson.

Jackson said Lawal's recent woes are to be expected.

"He talk a big game and calling people bums, it's just karma. Look at him. He's a very cocky individual," said Jackson.

Lawal tested positive for Drostanolone, but denied using any illegal substances.

Jackson shows a good sense of humor later in the interview over the fact that King Mo was mocking on his role in the "A-Team."

Obesity, body composition, and prostate cancer

??Obesity, body composition, and prostate cancer

Established risk factors for prostate cancer have not translated to effective prevention or adjuvant care strategies. Several epidemiologic studies suggest greater body adiposity may be a modifiable risk factor for high-grade (Gleason 7, Gleason 8-10) prostate cancer and prostate cancer mortality.

However, BMI only approximates body adiposity, and may be confounded by centralized fat deposition or lean body mass in older men. Our objective was to use bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) to measure body composition and determine the association between prostate cancer and total body fat mass (FM) fat-free mass (FFM), and percent body fat (%BF), and which body composition measure mediated the association between BMI or waist circumference (WC) with prostate cancer.

Methods: The study used a multi-centered recruitment protocol targeting men scheduled for prostate biopsy.

Men without prostate cancer at biopsy served as controls (n=1057). Prostate cancer cases were classified as having Gleason 6 (n=402), Gleason 7 (n=272), or Gleason 8-10 (n=135) cancer.

BIA and body size measures were ascertained by trained staff prior to diagnosis, and clinical and comorbidity status were determined by chart review. Analyses utilized multivariable linear and logistic regression.

Results: Body size and composition measures were not significantly associated with low-grade (Gleason 6) prostate cancer.

In contrast, BMI, WC, FM, and FFM were each significantly associated with an increased risk of Gleason 7 and Gleason 8-10 prostate cancer. Furthermore, BMI and WC were no longer associated with Gleason 8-10 (ORBMI=1.039 (1.000, 1.081), ORWC=1.016 (0.999, 1.033), continuous scales) with control for total body FFM (ORBMI=0.998 (0.946, 1.052), ORWC=0.995 (0.974, 1.017)).

Furthermore, increasing FFM remained significantly associated with Gleason 7 (ORFFM = 1.030 (1.008, 1.052)) and Gleason 8-10 (ORFFM = 1.044 (1.014, 1.074)) after controlling for FM.

Conclusion: Our results suggest that associations between BMI and WC with high-grade prostate cancer are mediated through the measurement of total body FFM. It is unlikely that FFM causes prostate cancer, but instead provides a marker of testosterone and IGF1 activities involved with retaining lean mass as men age.

Golden Globes crown new galaxy of new TV stars (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? The Golden Globes crowned a new galaxy of television stars on Sunday, honoring a slew of shows in their first season and leaving old favorites out in the cold

Psychological thriller "Homeland," which premiered on cable channel Showtime in October, won best TV drama series and best actress for Claire Danes in her role as a suspicious bi-polar CIA agent tracking a possible home-grown terrorist.

"It feels completely unreal. The shows were so amazing this year and (given) the work done in TV these days, to have won the award is just beyond belief," Howard Gordon, co-producer of the tense post September 11 drama, told reporters backstage.

Only "Modern Family" retained its Golden Globe trophy from last year. The ABC mockumentary beat off challenges from Fox's "New Girl" and previous favorite "Glee" to win best TV comedy series for a second consecutive year.

But the absence of AMC critical darling "Mad Men", off the air in 2011 and ineligible because of a contract dispute, threw the drama categories wide open.

Former "Frasier" actor Kelsey Grammer, in a new guise as ruthless mayor in the dark Starz drama "Boss", took home the best drama actor trophy, and Jessica Lange was honored for her supporting role as a disturbed neighbor in the FX haunted house saga "American Horror Story."

"It's really, really flattering. We have taken note of the fact we got a lot of attention right out of the gate," Grammer told reporters afterward.

Peter Dinklage, who plays a scheming dwarf in HBO's freshman fantasy series "Game of Thrones," won best supporting actor, while Idris Elba was a new face on the winner's podium for BBC America detective mini-series "Luther".

But the Golden Globes also shone the light on new comedies.

Matt LeBlanc won the Golden Globe he never took home for his long-running role as the philandering Joey on "Friends." LeBlanc was honored for playing a version of Joey in the TV industry satire "Episodes."

"They wrote a Matt LeBlanc who, to be honest, is way more interesting than the real thing. I wish I were him," said LeBlanc, whose competition included "30 Rock" star Alec Baldwin.

Laura Dern was a surprise best comedy actress winner for HBO's little-watched "Enlightened," while Britain's "Downton Abbey" and its tale of an aristocratic family and their servants in the 1930s was a popular winner of best TV mini-series.

The Golden Globes were bad news for network television. "Modern Family" was the only show from one of the four main free to view U.S. networks, with cable shows and actors picking up every other honor.

Indonesia tries to deter train 'surfers' ? again (AP)

JAKARTA, Indonesia ? Indonesia has gone to imaginative extremes to try to stop commuters from illegally riding the roofs of trains ? hosing down the scofflaws with red paint, threatening them with dogs and appealing for help from religious leaders.

Now the authorities have an intimidating and possibly even deadly new tactic: Suspending rows of grapefruit-sized concrete balls to rake over the top of trains as they pull out of stations, or when they go through rail crossings.

Authorities hope the balls ? which could deliver serious blows to the head ? will be enough to deter defiant roof riders.

"We've tried just about everything, even putting rolls of barbed wire on the roof, but nothing seems to work," said Mateta Rizahulhaq, a spokesman for the state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api. "Maybe this will do it."

Trains that crisscross Indonesia on poorly maintained tracks left behind by Dutch colonizers six decades ago usually are packed with passengers, especially during the rush hour.

Hundreds seeking to escape the overcrowded carriages clamor to the top. Some ride high to avoid paying for a ticket. Others do so because ? despite the dangers, with dozens killed or injured every year ? "rail surfing" is fun.

The first dozen or so balls were installed Tuesday hundreds of yards (meters) from the entrance of a train station just outside the capital, Jakarta. Painted silver, the balls hung by chains from what looked like the frame of a giant soccer goal.

But there was a glitch: the chains were too short, leaving a gap of about 16 inches (40 cm) between the balls and the roofs of the passing train carriages. Rizahulhaq said adjustments would be made.

If successful, the project will be expanded, with balls also set up near railway crossings.

Asked about worries that the balls could hurt or even kill those who defy the roof-riding ban, he insisted that wasn't really his problem.

"They don't have to sit on top," he said. "And we've already told them, if the train is full, go to the office. We will be happy to reimburse their tickets."

The commuters, known as "Atappers" or "Roofers," meanwhile are hardcore in their determination to stay on top.

"I was really scared when I first heard about these balls," said Mulyanto, a 27-year-old shopkeeper, who rides between his hometown of Bogor and Jakarta almost every day for work. "It sounds like it could be really dangerous."

"But I don't think it'll last long," he said. "They've tried everything to keep us from riding ... in the end we always win."

"We like it up there, it's windy, really nice."

Many of the roof riders ? and regular passengers ? say the main problem lies with Indonesia's dilapidated railway system. There are not enough trains to meet demand, they say. And there are constant delays in service.

"People have jobs! They can't be late," said Parto, a trader at the Jakarta stock exchange, who can usually be found sitting inside. "If the train is late, they'll do whatever they have to."

Several years ago, paint guns were set up to spray those riding on the top of carriages so authorities could identify and round up the guilty travelers. But roof riders destroyed the equipment soon after. The exhortations of clerics didn't work. Neither did the dogs.

At one point, police decided to do the expected: arrest the culprits. But their officers were pelted with rocks and they gave up.
