New research finds that these caps are notably shorter in people with depression?which has been linked to irregular stress hormone levels. The findings are in the journal Biological Psychiatry. [Mikael Wikgren, et al., "Short Telomeres in Depression and the General Population Are Associated with a Hypocortisolemic State"]
Folks without depression who reported feeling the most stressed also had shorter telomeres. And abnormal levels of stress hormones have been found in people with post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic fatigue syndrome and irritable bowl syndrome. Which means that many more people might have chromosomes that are shortening in short order.

Soccer, hockey, dance, skating, Brownies, Scouts, skiing, swimming, school activities, homework, not to mention play and sleep time, fill our children?s lives. Now add in the parental activities, including work, fitness, volunteering, and home maintenance ? and well, 24 hours just doesn?t seem to be enough.
See if the following list of strategies can help your family learn to gain control of their time:
1. Hold a Family Meeting
? First parents need to objectively determine some initial priorities for their family. These need to be based upon last years schedule, the individual family member?s personalities, finances, current commitments and the comfort level of the family. Some questions that will guide this process are: Do they want to focus on activities or academics based upon last years performances? Will the demands of school or work change? Do they want to fill time with activities or a balance of activities and free time? Do different family members have different needs? Is everyone enjoying their schedules? Is there time for friends, for family, for quiet time, for reading, or for playing?
? Once the family guidelines are determined, hold the meeting and give everyone a chance to choose one or two priorities for the session or year. If one member is having trouble narrowing their list down, have them put them in order of importance. Make sure everyone shares their list and explains why they put it in that order.
2. Create a Family Calendar
? Get a large calendar and input everyone?s current schedules for the upcoming month into it.
? Add or remove commitments based upon everyone?s priorities determined in the family meeting.
? Make sure this calendar includes school hours and activities, work schedules, activity schedules, religious events, family time, mealtime, homework time, sleep time and most importantly NON-scheduled time.
? Take into account hidden time- travel time, preparation/clean up time, waiting time, etc.
? Determine where conflicts lie ? and as a family see if you can figure out solutions. Maybe one child can suggest a friend they could car pool with, maybe another can walk to their activity, or maybe one can bring their homework along and do it while their sibling is in a lesson.
? Depending on the comfort level of the family ? activities may need to be removed or postponed. Some families thrive on
being busy while others need to have a more relaxed schedule.
? Make sure that everyone is in agreement or can live with the schedule.
? Try it for one month and then have another meeting and evaluate the schedule. Make sure it works for everyone and make necessary changes.
How to Handle Those Schedules and Not Waste TIme
Once the priorities and scheduling are done, there are few things that families need to do to make sure that they can handle their schedules and not waste their precious time.
ESTABLISH ROUTINES ? If everyone follows a routine that works, life will run much smoother. Some areas where routines are a must are: before and after school, homework time, chores and meals.
ELIMINATE CLUTTER ? Looking for things wastes a lot of time. Have set places for the things you use daily ? keys, school items, library books, bags, purses, lunch kits, etc.
DEAL WITH PAPER IMMEDIATELY ? Read and recycle mail right at the mailbox, write all pertinent information off school papers, newsletters, mail, flyers, etc on your family calendar and recycle them.
AVOID PERFECTIONSISM ? Aim for completion and excellence. A little dust or a wrinkle won?t hurt.
LIMIT DETAILS ? We have so many choices available to us in life. Limit the decisions you offer your family. Ask questions like ?Would you prefer a peanut butter or ham sandwich?? rather than ?What do you want for lunch??
TIME WASTERS ? Limit the amount of time family members do the following: watch TV, play video games, surf the Internet, or talk on the phone ? unless you are a teenage girl!
When we have children in school, we can?t help but be busy. But being busy with things that are important to us is very different than being overwhelmed by disarray. If we take the time as a family to determine our priorities and work together to eliminate time wasters, we will be in control of our time!

Economic Recovery - Atlanta Real Estate Forum
Those attending the International Building Show in Orlando, Fla. last week were treated to an appearance by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke. Citing that restraints on credit for home buyers and home builders alike continue to impede the housing and economic recovery, Bernanke stated, ?Banks remain reluctant to make loans, both to mortgage borrowers and home builders.?
The Fed chairman said that his message to regulators is for them to take a balanced approach and to approve loans for those who meet sound underwriting standards. ?Do not turn away creditworthy borrowers, and that includes home builders,? he said.
?Chairman Bernanke understands that today?s tight credit conditions are preventing qualified buyers from obtaining home loans and builders from getting financing for the construction of viable new home building projects ? and that this is harming the housing market as well as the overall economy,? said Barry Rutenberg, the newly elected chairman of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and a home builder from Gainesville, Fla.
Noting that many local markets have an overhang of empty and foreclosed homes, the current harsh lending environment, and that the weak housing market is impairing the financial health of home owners, Bernanke said that the ?state of the housing market has been a key impediment to a faster recovery.?
?For these reasons, and because the troubled housing market depresses construction activity and employment, we need to continue to develop and implement policies that will help the housing sector get back on its feet,? the Fed chairman said. ?No single solution will be sufficient. But sustained efforts to address the many interlocking factors holding back the housing market will pay dividends in the long run.?
He also added that the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac limits on investor loans are counterproductive in the current economic climate and that policy should be to encourage more loans to help ease the inventory of distressed properties.
Bernanke?s remarks on the need to take more aggressive action to support a housing recovery confirms what the nation?s home builders have been saying for some time and reiterates similar themes in a Jan. 4 white paper provided to Congress, in which the Federal Reserve noted that ?restoring the health of the housing market is a necessary part of a broader strategy for economic recovery.?
Fixing the nation?s housing woes is taking on a sense of increasing urgency in Washington. In unveiling a new plan last week, President Obama cited the important role that housing plays in the economy.
?A lack of building demand has kept hundreds of thousands of construction workers idle,? said Obama. ?Everybody involved in the home building business ? folks who make windows, folks who make carpets ? they?ve all been impacted. The challenge is massive in size and scope, because we?ve got a multi-trillion dollar housing industry.?
Yesterday, the President reiterated the high value that Americans place on homeownership and the need to help home owners while commenting on the mortgage settlement agreement reached between the states and five major banks.
?We can?t wait to get things done and to provide relief to America?s home owners,? Obama said. ?We need to keep doing everything we can to help home owners and our economy.?
?You work and you save your entire life to buy a home,? Obama added. ?That?s where you raise your family, that?s where your kids? memories are formed. That?s your stake, your claim on the American Dream.?
With the proper policies in place, housing can serve as an engine of job growth, said Rutenberg, who noted that building 100 homes creates more than 300 full-time jobs and generates $8.9 million in federal, state and local revenues to fund local schools and strengthen communities across the nation.
?In this key election year, the voters are calling on the Administration and Congress to take actions to restore the health of the housing industry in order to create jobs, increase household wealth and keep the economy on an upward trajectory,? he added.

UCLA School of Nursing, LAUSD Get Middle Schoolers Moving ...
LOS ANGELES?(BUSINESS WIRE)?Funded by a five-year, $1.2 million grant, Dr. Kynna Wright-Volel, PhD, RN, FAAN, Assistant Professor and Robert Wood Johnson Nurse Faculty Scholar from the UCLA School of Nursing and the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) are launching Project SHAPE LA?, a coordinated school-health program to increase physical activity among youth in LA County schools. Project SHAPE LA? targets 24 middle schools in underserved areas of Los Angeles and will touch nearly 12,000 students.
?Support for our PE teachers is imperative at this crucial time in our State?s budgetary crisis?
?As a pediatric nurse practitioner, I see the health consequences when children are overweight or obese; however, the clinic visit is but one part of the solution,? said Dr. Wright- Volel. ?Research shows that school-based programs that are supported by collaborations among universities, schools, businesses and parents, can decrease obesity and obesity-related behavior. We believe that Project SHAPE LA? will do just that!?
According to the LA County Department of Public Health, one in five children in the LAUSD are considered obese. Obesity during childhood has immediate consequences, including hypertension, high cholesterol and the development of metabolic syndrome as well as psychosocial problems such as low self-esteem and poor body image. Childhood obesity, if left unchecked into adulthood can lead to a variety of chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain types of cancer including breast and colon.
?This is an important component of an overall strategy for improving the health and well being of our community, which includes physical activity, improved nutrition and nutrition education and health education,? said Rene Gonzalez, Assistant Superintendent of Student Health and Human Services.
Engaging in regular physical activity is widely accepted as an effective preventative measure. Project SHAPE LA??Shaping Health for Adolescents through Physical/Nutrition Education Los Angeles ? uses three components: SPARK PE, an evidence based PE program, educational training of physical education teachers in the areas of nutrition, physical education, curriculum development and professional development and up to $2,000 per year of PE equipment per school.
Anticipated outcomes from this program include:
? Increased moderate to vigorous physical activity
? Increased scores on the California State Board of Education?s FitnessGram Test in the areas of aerobic fitness, body composition and muscular strength/endurance
? Increased academic achievement, as evidenced by higher scores on the California standardized test
?Support for our PE teachers is imperative at this crucial time in our State?s budgetary crisis,? said Chad Fenwick, LAUSD Physical Activity Advisor. This grant will give approximately 85 PE teachers a monetary stipend and intense, evidence-based training in physical activity, nutrition and physical education curriculum.
The grant is jointly funded by the National Institutes of Nursing Research and the Office of Behavioral Social Science Research, who are both committed to prevention of disease and to promoting the health of individuals, families and communities.
Another component of the grant supports the recruitment of 100 minority high school students a year. These students will be provided education and mentoring in the areas of obesity prevention, leadership and careers in health and allied health professions. This leadership program will be piloted at Belmont High School. According to Councilman Eric Garcetti, District 13, ?This partnership with Belmont High School shows a strong commitment by Dr. Wright-Volel and the UCLA School of Nursing to the investment in our youth as they learn to be the next leaders of our city.?
?With this grant, we want PE teachers to ignite a passion for physical activity ? to teach kids that by being active they can be healthy and achieve their dreams,? added Wright-Volel.
The UCLA School of Nursing is redefining nursing through the pursuit of uncompromised excellence in research, education, practice, policy and patient advocacy. Rated among the nation?s top nursing schools by U.S. News & World Report, the school also is ranked No. 4 in nursing research funded by the National Institutes of Health and No. 1 in NIH stimulus funding. In 2009-10, the school received $18 million in total research grant funding and was awarded 26 faculty research grants. The school offers programs for undergraduate (B.S.), postgraduate (M.S.N. and M.E.C.N.) and doctoral (Ph.D.) students.

NY Fashion Week: Wearable, sellable looks for fall (AP)
NEW YORK ? Fashion designers, retailers, editors and stylists settled into their routines Thursday for eight days of previews at New York Fashion Week with barely a blink at all the photographers' flashes: a sign of business-as-usual stability.
The luxury market that most of the runway shows speak to has, over the past year, steadily recovered at the retail level despite the volatile economy. The clothes to hit the catwalk in the early going showed a continued confidence in the colorblocking, tailoring and easy, elongated shapes that have been trickling into stores and will arrive in force come spring.
The brands BCBG Max Azria and Richard Chai Love kept colors basic and used hardly any embellishment, turning out straightforward, wearable clothes. Surely there are more flamboyant moments to come, but fashion is, after all, the marriage of art and commerce. Of course, there's the celebrity element, too, and Tadashi Shoji took care of red carpet looks with his Shanghai-visits-Hollywood gowns.
Cynthia Rowley melded high-tech touches, including a wall of screens simulcasting each look making its way down the runway, with clothes inspired by old-school craftsmen such as cobblers and welders.
Dozens of shows are planned at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week tents that serve as the hub, with another 12, including Skaist-Taylor and Tory Burch, presenting their shows elsewhere on the Lincoln Center campus.
"We look at every space. The question for me is, `How do you break open the red velvet ropes?'" said Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, director of fashion at Lincoln Center.
Burch's show, for example, while an invitation-only event, is held in an all-windowed spot so Winston Wolkoff expects passers-by to get a peek.
However, big names such as Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein, who all show later in the week, will draw the crowd to off-site places and likely enforce the strict guest list.
Here's a look at some of the shows from the first day.
BCBG MAX AZRIA
The collection designed by Max Azria and his wife Luboy continued the colorblocking trend that's already making its way to red carpets and magazine covers for the spring season, but there was also a muting of colors. Neon pink became a muted coral here, and purple a mellow merlot.
Embellishment was sparse. The emphasis was on geometric shapes, intricate pleats and unexpected mixes of fabrics, including several pieces with patchwork-style pieces of recycled-but-real fur.
In the notes prepared for the retailers, editors and stylists who descended upon Lincoln Center's Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week tents for the first of eight days of previews, the Azrias said they were using the palette and textures "to add character."
It seems a continuation of the effort the designers have made in the last few seasons to elevate the brand to a more sophisticated, restrained ? and more expensive? ? level.
Colorblocked garments have geometric chunks of bright colors and have been fashion staples since Yves Saint Laurent's 1965 collection inspired by Dutch painter Piet Mondrian.
RICHARD CHAI
Richard Chai turned menswear into powerful looks for women with top coats, tweed jackets and pinstripe pants for female customers of his Love brand, and he retooled trousers in his men's clothes to be slimmer and shorter than most guys are used to. Some of the best pieces were stadium and duffel coats, appealing to all sorts of customers.
The women looked put together in their mostly gray-and-black blazers and button-down shirts. There were flashes of femininity as Chai also offered some sheer layers and some pieces in pretty red floral print, a contrast to all the tailoring.
TADASHI SHOJI
Tadashi Shoji sent a parade of gowns down the catwalk. Nothing overly complicated or particularly edgy, but glamorous with a hint of sexy. A flame-red washed velvet gown had a dramatic cowl back filled with black beading, and ballgown with a gold-and-black beaded lace bodice had the full Cinderella treatment for its skirt. The green blouson-top gown with mermaid hemline that opened the show was tailor-made for a bombshell.
For more of a delicate look, there was a green lace tiered dress with a handkerchief hem, while the trick of putting sheer black lace over gold fitted linings had a more sultry effect.
CYNTHIA ROWLEY
Cynthia Rowley says her fall collection was inspired by "mechanics, cobblers and leathermen. Welding, oil slicks. Women artists making big, strong work." Showing her own craftsman skills, Rowley somehow turned that into a lovely blouson dress in a blue-flame print, a soft buttery leather shift, and a tweed denim shirtdress. She paired skinny pants covered in a tortoise-shell print with a leather jacket and a jersey jumper with mixed print sleeves.
There were a few gimmicks, including jewel-encrusted coveralls, which was more jumpsuit than uniform, but still perhaps a little too literal. The jeweled collars, however, which created a turtleneck effect, seem like something that could really catch on.

While appearing on "The Rosie Show," the 36-year-old TV host revealed she got pregnant when she was just 16 years old -- and she was determined to keep the child.

"I was so delusional," Handler said Wednesday. "I was like, 'I'm ready for a baby.'"

We want you to enjoy your life and not be raising a child, and we're certainly not going to raise it for you."

Greek deal prospects rise, euro ministers to meet (Reuters)
ATHENS/BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? Prospects for a deal on a second international bailout for Greece brightened on Wednesday when euro zone finance ministers were summoned to talks in Brussels while Greek political leaders met to approve a tough new reform and austerity program.
Eurogroup chairman Jean-Claude Juncker invited ministers from the 17-nation single currency area to meet on Thursday evening and the International Monetary Fund said managing director Christine Lagarde would also attend.
They are expected to examine a complex package involving a 130 billion euro EU/IMF rescue and a bond swap with private creditors, which hinges on Athens accepting conditions that require big cuts in many Greeks' living standards.
Greeks face a dreadful year of recession, a government source said. Athens now forecast the economy will shrink between four and five percent in 2012, the source said, adding to a relentless dive in economic output for the last four years which has sent unemployment soaring.
The figure, contained in a draft letter to Lagarde, is far worse than the 2.8 percent fall in gross domestic product forecast when the 2012 budget went to parliament in November, highlighting the conundrum that more austerity will damage the economy further and drive Greece's massive debts yet higher.
Juncker called the Eurogroup meeting even though leaders of the three Greek coalition parties were still discussing with Prime Minister Lucas Papademos the terms of a rescue package to avoid a chaotic default in March that would send tremors around the euro zone and possibly further afield.
Two sources close to the Athens talks said the government would promise spending cuts and tax rises totaling 13 billion euros from 2012 to 2015, almost double the seven billion it originally pledged.
The bailout package also pledges a 22 percent cut to the minimum wage level, a party official said.
RELUCTANT LEADERS
International lenders are demanding that the leaders of the conservative New Democracy party, PASOK socialists and far-right LAOS commit themselves in writing to implement the program of pay and pension cuts, structural and administrative reforms.
Euro zone officials say the full package must be agreed with Greece and approved by the euro zone, European Central Bank and IMF before February 15 so that complex legal paperwork can be completed in time for a bond redemption deadline on March 20.
However, the leaders have been loath to accept the lenders' tough conditions, which are certain to be unpopular with voters,
as they face parliamentary elections possibly as early as April.
After a series of delays, the leaders finally received a 15-page document on Wednesday morning laying out the principles of the bailout and its conditions, a party official told Reuters. Attached were a further 30 or so pages laying out how the program will be implemented.
The leaders will have to decide whether to push through a 15 percent cut to supplementary pensions or a combination of cuts in main and supplementary pensions, the official said.
Other elements of the deal have been gradually slotting into place, including a bond swap with private creditors to ease Greece's debt burden by reducing the value of government bonds held by banks and insurers.
The new bonds would have an average interest rate of around 3.5 percent, said state NET TV, with creditors having to swallow a 70 percent cut in the value of their debt holdings.
Private holders of Greek debt will discuss the debt swap plan aimed at slashing the country's debt pile in Paris on Thursday, a banking official told Reuters.
German Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Steffen said in Berlin the bond swap offer to private creditors could be made as early as next week.
He voiced exasperation at Greece's failure to implement economic and fiscal reforms since the debt crisis erupted two years ago, saying governance remained below European standards.
"I believe we can say today that we have made little progress on Greece since 2010, worryingly little progress," Steffen said.
ECB NEEDED
Ratings agency Standard & Poor's said Greece would likely fail to achieve sustainable debt levels if it relied on a 70 percent reduction in the value of bonds held by private creditors, putting the onus on the ECB to also take losses.
"The reduction ... is probably not sufficient to make the debt sustainable, given the outlook for GDP itself," S&P analyst Frank Gill said.
With banks and insurers having mostly agreed to take a hefty writedown, Athens and the commercial banks are urging the ECB to forego profits on its Greek bond holdings to help cut the debt to a sustainable level. That could raise 12 billion euros or more.
But ECB policymakers are still divided on what contribution the bank could make to a restructuring of Greek debt, two euro zone monetary policy sources said.
While the ECB has ruled out joining private creditors in voluntarily accepting losses on its Greek bonds, it could provide indirect relief by renouncing profits from bonds it bought at below face value.
The ECB's 23-member Governing Council, which holds a regular monthly meeting on Thursday, has yet to agree a position. Some policymakers are reluctant to share the burden for fear of easing pressure on Athens to agree spending cuts. There are also concerns about setting a precedent for other countries.
"There is no agreement yet. Some people on the Council still oppose this," said one monetary policy source, adding that ECB President Mario Draghi had not yet revealed his position.
An opinion poll on Wednesday showed that PASOK, which ruled Greece until Papandreou's government collapsed last November, has most to fear from elections. The monthly survey by Public Issue for Kathimerini newspaper showed support for PASOK had collapsed to eight percent from the nearly 44 percent it commanded when it returned to power in 2009.
