Hands On With the Samsung Galaxy Camera

BERLIN - Samsung had not one, but three big reveals tonight at its Unpacked event here at IFA. In addition to the much-publicized Samsung Galaxy Note II, the Korean manufacturer also took the wraps off some new Windows 8 devices, as well as the Galaxy Camera.

The Galaxy Camera basically looks as though Samsung took a point-and-shoot device and slapped a smartphone on the back. From the front? Normal camera. But turn it over and there's a 4.8-inch display that is now commonly found on many Android-based smartphones. It takes up almost all of the Galaxy Camera's back panel, but given that the device is touch-based, there's no need for extra buttons. All the bells and whistles are inside, courtesy of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

As a result, the Galaxy Camera is like an Android smartphone inside a camera, minus the calling features. When powered up, two icons provide you with the option of Camera or Applications. Tap Applications and up pops the rows of Android apps familiar to anyone who has adopted a gadget that runs Google's mobile OS.

The idea is that the Galaxy Camera will help users better manage their photos. Those pics won't languish on cameras for months after an event, and with 3G/4G and Wi-Fi connectivity, you can instantly post to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and more without having to hook up the camera to a PC and transfer shots.

If you're a prolific photographer, meanwhile, the Galaxy Camera allows for sorting into different folders, as well as searching by time, location, or face. If you've ever clicked through 500 photos on a camera looking for one shot, this option could definitely come in handy.

If you want to add some text to your pics, an on-screen keyboard pops up for your typing needs. The Galaxy Camera is a bit bulky and wide to comfortably handle a long email; you're not going to be tapping out messages like a text-happy tween. But if you're just labeling a folder, captioning a Facebook photo, or telling a friend to check out your photo, the keyboard serves it purpose.

Samsung chief JK Shin said at tonight's event that the Galaxy Camera combines camera features you can't find on a smartphone and smartphone features you can't find on cameras.

I fiddled around with the Galaxy Camera a bit this afternoon, and it's an intriguing concept. The device took crisp shots, even without the various "Pro" modes that are intended to help turn your snapshots into professional-looking images. Having that huge screen on the back is also a plus; no more squinting at a tiny panel to make sure no one blinked.

I'm admittedly not an avid Android user; I can navigate my iPhone and iPad with ease, but Android often leaves me aggravated. If you're familiar with the OS, however, picking up the Galaxy Camera should be a snap. If you don't want to deal with apps, the share widget combines favorite email, social media, and chat services. We didn't have Internet connectivity to test out the Web-based features of the Camera during our demo, but the Galaxy Camera featured the standard Android skin, and provides acccess to Google Play and Samsung Apps.

But who should buy it? Most of our smartphones already have fairly top-notch cameras that can easily handle photos of happy hour, your new baby, or what you had for dinner last night. Do we need a separate camera at this point?

It appears as though Samsung is aiming the Galaxy Camera at those who want shots that are bit more impressive than the ones pulled off your smartphone - and those who want to share those pics as soon as possible. This could be bad news if it falls into the hands of the friend who snaps unflattering photos of you and has them tagged before you can even pay your tab. But if you've ever begged someone to share their photos from an event, they'll have no excuse for procrastinating with the Galaxy Camera.

If you're looking for a camera with a little more oomph than your smartphone, but one that keeps it simple thanks to the Android OS, the Galaxy Camera might be a good option. But if your content with the quality of your Instagram and Facebook shots, you might just want to spend the money on a new smartphone - like the Galaxy Note II, perhaps.

A few other features tucked into the Camera include voice commands, which control things like zooming in and out, setting the timer, or taking a photo. If you have another Galaxy device, link it up to the Camera and use the smartphone as a viewfinder for better group shots. The Share Shot feature will send photos to other devices in real-time over Wi-Fi, so you don't have to take the same photo 10 different times with separate cameras.

Pricing and availability have not yet been released, but I imagine Samsung will want the Camera out in time for the holidays. The Galaxy Note II is due in October.

(AP) ? Isaac sloshed northwards into the nation's midsection Friday after flooding stretches of Louisiana and knocking out power, leaving entire water-logged neighborhoods without lights, air conditioning or clean water.

It will be a few days before the soupy brown water recedes and people forced out of flooded neighborhoods can return home.

And the damage may not be done. Officials were pumping water from a reservoir to ease the pressure behind an Isaac-stressed dam in Mississippi on the Louisiana border. In Arkansas, power lines were downed and trees knocked over as Isaac moved north into the state.

The earthen dam on Lake Tangipahoa could unleash a 17-foot flood crest downstream in Louisiana if it were to give way, which prompted evacuations in small towns and rural areas Thursday. Officials released extra water through the dam and were considering punching a hole in it to lower the rain-swollen reservoir.

New Orleans, spared any major damage, lifted its curfew and returned to its usual liveliness, although it was dampened by heavy humidity.

"I have a battery-operated fan. This is the only thing keeping me going," said Rhyn Pate, a food services worker who sat under the eaves of a porch with other renters, making the best of the circumstances. "And a fly swatter to keep the bugs off me ? and the most important thing, insect repellent."

The heat was getting to Marguerite Boudreaux, 85, in Gretna, a suburb of New Orleans.

"I have a daughter who is an invalid and then my husband is 90 years old, so he's slowing down a lot," she said, red in the face as she stood in the doorway of her house, damp and musky from the lack of air conditioning.

Isaac dumped as much as 16 inches of rain in some areas, and about 500 people had to be rescued by boat or high-water vehicles.

At least five deaths were reported in Louisiana and Mississippi.

The latest two victims, a man and a woman, were discovered late Thursday in a home in the hard-hit town of Braithwaite, south of New Orleans. Authorities said deputies went to search for the couple after someone reported they had apparently not escaped the flooding. Their names were not immediately released.

An unidentified man died in a restaurant blaze in Gretna that firefighters could not control because of Isaac's strong winds Wednesday. Another man died falling from a tree during the storm and a tow truck driver in Mississippi was killed when a tree crushed the cab of his truck.

On Grand Isle, a barrier island on the Gulf, the town pumped away water. Sections of the only road to town had washed out.

On a street turned river in Reserve, on the east bank of the Mississippi River, two young men ferried their neighbors to the highway in a johnboat, using boards as paddles.

Lucien Chopin, 29, was last to leave his house, waiting until his wife and three kids, ages 7, 5 and 1 were safely away.

He was finally joining them late Thursday, hoping they would find a shelter.

His van was underwater and water flowed waist-high in the house he'd rented for eight months.

"It's like, everything is down the drain. I lost everything. I've gotta start all over."

Chopin was upset that pumps meant to keep the area dry either failed or were shut off.

"We knew it was coming, but they didn't tell us we had to evacuate. We had no idea it was gonna be like this," he said, a refrain echoed by many.

Cisco Gonzales, a heating and air conditioning business owner, said he got his boat and truck and headed for higher ground when he heard the water was rising quickly, from 0 to 6 feet of water in five minutes.

"I've never seen so much water in my life," said Gonzales, who built a home in Braithwaite, southeast of the city, after his previous home was damaged by Katrina in 2005.

He rode out the storm at a ferry landing and when the weather calmed, he went out and rescued about a dozen people.

"I got back to my house to assess the situation, and it's a mess," he said. "That's all I can say."

Isaac hit on the seventh anniversary of Katrina, a hurricane that devastated New Orleans.

The two storms had little in common. Katrina came ashore as a Category 3 storm, while Isaac was a Category 1 at its peak. Katrina barreled into the state and quickly moved through. Isaac lingered across the landscape at less than 10 mph and wobbled constantly. Because of its sluggishness, Isaac dumped copious amounts of rain. Many people said more water inundated their homes during this storm than during Katrina.

Both storms, however, caused the Mississippi River to flow backward. And both prompted criticism of government officials.

In the case of Isaac, officials' calls for evacuations so long after the storm made landfall caused some consternation.

Jefferson Parish Council President Chris Roberts said forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami needed a new way of measuring the danger that goes beyond wind speed.

"The risk that a public official has is, people say, 'Aw, it's a Category 1 storm, and you guys are out there calling for mandatory evacuations,'" Roberts said.

Eric Blake, a specialist at the hurricane center, said that although Isaac's cone shifted west as it zigzagged toward the Gulf Coast, forecasters accurately predicted its path, intensity and rainfall. He did say the storm came ashore somewhat slower than anticipated.

Blake cautioned against using Katrina as a benchmark for flooding during other storms.

"Every hurricane is different," Blake said. "If you're trying to use the last hurricane to gauge your storm surge risk, it's very dangerous."

Crews intentionally breached a levee that was strained by Isaac's floodwaters in southeast Louisiana's Plaquemines Parish, which is outside the federal levee system. Aerial images showed the water gushing out.

In Louisiana alone, the storm cut power to 901,000 homes and businesses, or about 47 percent of the state. That was down to 39 percent, or about 821,000, by Thursday evening, the Public Service Commission said.

Entergy Corp., Louisiana's largest power company, said Isaac knocked out power to nearly 770,000 of its customers in Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas. Only three storms have left more customers without power: Hurricanes Katrina (1.1 million), Gustav (964,000) and Rita (800,000), the company said in a news release.

More than 15,000 utility workers began restoring power to customers in Louisiana and Mississippi, but officials said it would be at least two days before power was fully restored.

In Mississippi, several coastal communities struggled with all the extra water, including Pascagoula, where a large portion of the city flooded and water blocked downtown intersections.

High water also prevented more than 800 people from returning to their homes in Bay St. Louis, a small town that lost most of its business district to Katrina's storm surge.

Robbie Daniel, 55, an industrial engineer, and his wife, Kathi, a retired school teacher, live in a house on the Tchoutacabouffa River in Biloxi, and hadn't left home since Tuesday. Their house is on stilts and was surrounded by chest deep water.

Kathi saw online Thursday that casinos could be opening so they hopped in a kayak, paddled to their car on higher ground and drove to Island View Casino Resort in Gulfport.

"Tired of sitting there watching rain," Kathi said.

Isaac's holiday gift: Gas prices still rising

NBC's Tom Costello reports on the recent spike in prices at the pump as travelers hit the road for the Labor Day weekend.

By Richard Satran, NBC News contributor

?Updated at 2:57 p.m. EDT: Gas prices jumped again Thursday in the wake of Hurricane Isaac, leaving drivers facing the prospect of costly fillups as they take to the highway for a final summer spin over Labor Day weekend.

Prices climbed two cents a gallon to $3.82 nationally to a record for this time of year and are likely to edge higher still in coming days,?the American Automobile Association said. The gains came on top of a five-cent surge Wednesday when Isaac pounded the oil-rich Gulf Coast region.?The price has risen steadily from the summer low of $3.33 on July 2.

Consumers are likely to get a price break soon as oil and gas companies gradually restart their Gulf operations, but AAA said drivers should expect to pay a few more pennies by the end of the holiday weekend.

Isaac spared heavily populated New Orleans from the devastation wreaked by Hurricane Katrina seven years ago. But this week?s storm caused widespread damage and dumped more water in the region than its sister storm seven years ago, according to the National Weather Service. Thousands remain stranded and power outages have been widespread.

Up to 50,000 people in Louisiana ?were ordered to evacuate Thursday as a dam seemed ready to give way?across the state line in Mississippi.

Drivers caught a break, though, as the storm appears to have spared the region's many refineries and oil rigs, unlike the devastation that affected the industry for months after Katrina in 2005.? As a result, AAA analysts expect pump prices to decline quickly after the holiday.

?We would expect prices to be going back down by mid-September,? said Michael Green, AAA public relations manager. ?We can?t estimate exactly how much. ?

Isaac?s slow journey through the Gulf and Louisiana?s energy-refining heartland is still driving prices higher across the land, but from initial assessments the storm appears to have had no lasting damage on energy infrastructure, he said. ?Refineries and rigs shut down as a precautionary measure.

One refinery in Belle Chasse, La., was flooded, according to wire reports.

?It?s a little early to say for certain but it appears they were relatively unharmed,? said Green.? ?It?s still to be seen when there are deeper assessments, but so far there are no reports of anything significant. That?s good news for the oil refiners.?

As the storm headed north, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan warned gas stations owner against price gouging after complaints against some Southern outlets in the storm?s path.?

?I?m putting (gasoline station) retailers on notice that these circumstances are not an excuse to gouge customers at the pump,? said Madigan. ?My office will be closely monitoring gas prices to ensure gas station owners are operating legally.?

Despite the storm and the higher gasoline costs, nearly 33 million Americans still plan to travel for Labor Day, said AAA. That would be a 3 percent rise in traffic from a year ago. ?Americans have been driving more on major holidays this year than they did during the depths of the recent recession, the association reports.

Amid higher fuel demand and low gasoline inventory, prices have been pushing higher, although consumers will get a break soon due to a recent jump in refinery output, said Green. Refiners have had a relatively trouble-free season and were able to boost supplies to move to gas stations ahead of the storm season.

With the end of summer, there will be fewer drivers are on the roads, as well, further reducing fuel demand.? The change of season also means stations can sell less expensive gasoline than the ozone-friendly mix they are required to pump in summer months.

Another storm could tip the scales once again. The official end of the hurricane season is Oct. 31.

?There is still a chance of more storms but Labor Day is generally considered the peak,? said Green.

For gasoline prices, it looks like high time is this weekend.

GOP convention protesters: storms won't stop them

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? The few hundred protesters gathered under wet skies in a park about a half-mile from the GOP convention on Sunday said an impending hurricane that is supposed to dump even heavier rains on Tampa won't stop them from trying to get out their message that America's middle class is in trouble and needs to be restored.

Giant blocks of ice spelling out the words "middle class" were melting on a warm, sticky, rainy day. Occupy protesters it represents the melting away of the middle class.

That message rings true for 52-year-old Tom Gaurapp and Cheryl Landecker from Freeport, Ill. Both worked for Sensata Technologies, owned by Bain Capital, in the city of some 25,000 people. They say 170 jobs there, including their own, were outsourced to China. Occupy protesters are often made up of younger people who generally believe the financial system is stacked against the majority. But in Tampa, many older people joined the marchers.

They included Gaurapp and Landecker, who said that just a few years ago, they never would have considered joining such a protest.

"But then again, we wouldn't have dreamed our jobs would have gone to China," Gaurapp said.

For months, protesters were gearing up for scores of people to converge on Tampa the day before the convention began to showcase their laundry list of beefs and key messages. The groups included organized labor and Occupy Wall Street.

Neither protesters nor the GOP, however, could foresee Tropical Storm Isaac, which is expected to become a dangerous Category 2 hurricane by the time it makes land over the northern Gulf Coast sometime late Tuesday or early Wednesday. Tampa is expected to feel the brunt of the storm with winds, rain and maybe some flooding on Monday. The forecast caused Republicans to postpone their convention activities on Monday's opening day and not that many delegates seemed to be around Sunday to see the protesters.

Demonstrations stayed small. In fact, one against the Republican kickoff party in nearby St. Petersburg seemed to include more police than the 100 or so protesters.

Though jobs and uneven distribution of wealth were strong messages, marchers didn't seem to have a universal message.

Some came to oppose just Mitt Romney, who officially will become the Republican nominee for president on Thursday. Others didn't seem to care for Romney or President Barack Obama.

About 30 people, many with dogs, held a rally against Romney, who infamously strapped his dog in a crate to the top of his car on a family vacation years ago.

"If somebody is going to treat their animal inhumanely, how are they going to treat our country?" said Kim Swygert, 37, a law student from Tampa, who came with her Great Dane.

"He strapped his dog to the top of the car because he crapped, excuse my French," she said.

Several carried anti-Romney signs including one that read, "Don't roof rack me, bro."

The weather didn't deter 52 year-old Donald Butner. He says he's been sleeping at the Occupy camp in Tampa for a few months and that "we're here, baby, rain or shine. The weather is going to do what it is going to do."

Many protesters chanted "we are the 99 percent" and carried homemade signs. The 99 percent refers to the group's message that most don't share in the wealth of America.

The 54-year-old Landecker spoke to the group as rain started falling.

"These businesses have put corporate greed over everything else. If they can do it to us, they can do it to anybody," Landecker said.

Though protesters vow to stay put, if the weather threatens their safety or that of visitors on the streets, police officers will use public address systems and go person-to-person to warn them to leave, said Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor.

"As it is right now, there will be high winds and there will be rain but it's not going to be something that is going to prohibit anyone from doing what they want to do out on the streets," Castor said. "If it changes ... and it becomes an issue of public safety, we will order people into shelters."

About 50 people, from Occupy Wall Street and Code Pink groups, marched from the park about two blocks to the Tampa theater where the Faith and Freedom Coalition was holding an event. The protesters waved signs in front of people waiting to get into the theater, and seven of them lay down in front of the entrance. Other protesters covered them in a red cloth.

They were on the ground for about five minutes. When police asked them to move, they did, and then marched back to the park.

Code Pink is a women-focused group pushing to end the U.S.-led wars abroad. They held signs including, "Vagina. If you can't say it, don't legislate it," and "GOP, respect women."

"I'm completely opposed to the Ralph Reed agenda of the war on women," said Rae Abileah, 29, of San Francisco. Reed started the Faith and Freedom Coalition, which among other causes is against abortion.

At least one arrest was made. A man that police said had a machete strapped to his leg was subdued after he resisted officers, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Tips For Making Bankruptcy A More Positive Experience | Siben ...

TIP! See to it that you are aware of the laws concerning bankruptcy before you consider filing. For instance, somebody cannot transfer assets from a filer?s name up to a year after they file.

It is not uncommon these days for people to be drowning in debt. The bills keep adding up and it is never a friendly voice on the other line when the phone rings. If this sounds a lot like your personal situation, you may have started thinking about filing for bankruptcy. To find out if filing for personal bankruptcy is the right thing for you to do, read on.

TIP! Know that you are able to re-file if you?ve made a mistake in filing for bankruptcy. Generally though, there is only a window of 30 days after the first filing to refile after dismissal has occurred.

You must disclose the names of all creditors to your bankruptcy attorney. This not only includes lenders, hospitals and credit card companies, but also any friends or family that you owe money to.

TIP! Prior to choosing a bankruptcy attorney, seek a free consultation with at least three attorneys. Make sure that you meet with an actual lawyer and not an assistant or paralegal, as these people are not allowed to provide legal advice.

Exercise some caution in repaying your debts when you know a bankruptcy filing in your future. Bankruptcy laws prohibit some creditor payoffs within 90 days of filing. When it comes to family members, a year is the cutoff for payoffs. Study applicable regulations prior to making any financial choices.

Personal Bankruptcy

TIP! Protect your house. Filing for bankruptcy will not always result in losing your home.

Learn about the personal bankruptcy rules before petitioning. There are many issues with personal bankruptcy code, and these pitfalls can cause problems with your case. Mistakes can also have your case dismissed. It is important to learn the bankruptcy code before filing bankruptcy. That way, you will have an easier road.

TIP! After filing a personal bankruptcy, remember to be careful of the debt that you try to take. Creditors exist who are willing to provide loans and other forms of credit to those who have recently emerged from bankruptcy.

You can avoid bankruptcy by paying your creditors on time and paying a little more than the minimum amount. Avoid charging up your credit card and do not purchase items you cannot afford.

TIP! Before you file for personal bankruptcy, check to make sure that all your problem debts will be cleared by bankruptcy. Debts like student loans always remain on your report even if you file.

Consider any other options available before filing for personal bankruptcy. Have you been through credit counseling first? There are various non-profit companies that may be able to help you. They can work with those you owe money to in order to give you lower payments and lowered interest rates, too. They pay your debts and you repay them.

TIP! Talk to an attorney about reducing your car payments so that you can keep your vehicle. Chapter 7 bankruptcy is one of the most common and effective.

A useful tip is to make sure you are ready for the possibility that your case is dismissed. By considering the worst-case scenario that could occur following a failed filing, (e.g. home foreclosure or repossession of your assets) you can make contingency plans and be better prepared.

Interest Rates

TIP! Write down a list of every debt you have. After this, you can file bankruptcy, so make sure this document is accurate.

Filing for bankruptcy should not be done on a whim. Talk to a bankruptcy lawyer to see if a debt repayment plan or reduction in interest rates is a viable option for you instead of bankruptcy. If foreclosure looms, think about getting your loan plan modified. The lender can help your financial situation by getting interest rates lowered, dropping late charges, and in some cases will allow you to pay the loan over a longer period of time. Creditors want their money. Often, they are willing to work out repayment plans with you in order to get it.

TIP! You don?t necessarily have to forfeit all your assets when you file for bankruptcy. You can often keep personal property.

Be honest when filing for bankruptcy, because hiding liabilities or assets can only cause trouble to you. Penalties may include fines, imprisonment or denial of the filing. Never hide anything, and make sure you come up with a well devised plan for dealing with bankruptcy.

TIP! If you think you have to file a petition for bankruptcy, get a lawyer who specializes in bankruptcy. A qualified attorney could give you advice that is necessary for filing and could represent you as you go to court making the process simpler.

If you are planning to file for bankruptcy, be sure to learn what types of assets you will be able to keep and which can be seized. You can find a listing of the asset types that are excluded from bankruptcy in the Bankruptcy Code. You can determine exactly which of your possessions are at risk by consulting this list before you file. This will ensure that you do not have any surprises once you have filed bankruptcy.

You are not alone when you are debating filing for bankruptcy. Don?t let the situation overwhelm you. Look at bankruptcy as a way to begin again

Change Car under finance with Bad Credit | DigitalDumpingGround ...

About a year ago I purchased a second hand?car with finance from a company called Moneybarn.?Moneybarn specialise in people like myself in that they will?lend to?people with a bad credit history and?I have bad credit.?They were one of only a few companies that were willing to lend to me.

After a year of having my car and making my repayments, I was wondering if I could change my current car on finance and get another car. My current car a Vauxhall Corsa?uses a lot of petrol in comparison to my old Ford Focus. I only got rid of the Focus because of the repair bills and insurance costs. This was quite possibly the worst decision I could have made and was at the least shortsighted.

Getting a Settlement Figure

The first thing I did was to contact the finance company Moneybarn?and ask for a settlement figure. This settlement figure is how much I would need to pay back to Moneybarn?in order to pay off the outstanding finance. I received this figure and armed with this information I could proceed onto the next step.

Finding out how much I would get for Part Exchange

The next step was to find out how much I would get if I part exchanged my current car. I was hoping that my car would be worth at least the settlement amount and then some more.

I received the part exchange offer amount and it worked out that I would be left with ?50 after paying off the car. However because I have bad credit my total payments for the year were ?2576.40 plus my initial deposit which meant I had already paid nearly ?3600. Once I worked that out I realised that it would be a big mistake to change my car and throw away all that money. Instead I will stick with the car until it is paid off.

Simplifying genetic codes to look back in time

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? Tokyo Institute of Technology researchers show simpler versions of the universal genetic code can still function in protein synthesis. In addition to understanding early primordial organisms, the research could lead to applications preventing non-natural genetically modified materials from entering the natural world.

Daisuke Kiga and co-workers at the Department of Computational Intelligence and Systems Science at Tokyo Institute of Technology, together with researchers across Japan, have shown that simpler versions of the universal genetic code, created by knocking out certain amino acids, can still function efficiently and accurately in protein synthesis [1].

The researchers conducted experiments altering the genetic code in a test tube. They removed the amino acid tryptophan and discovered that the resulting simplified code could still generate proteins as before.

By knocking out individual amino acids and observing the effects, scientists will be able to understand how early primordial organisms may have functioned and evolved. There will be also numerous applications for simplified genetic strains in laboratory experiments, which could potentially prevent non-natural genetically modified materials from entering the natural world.

Background and future developments

Daisuke Kiga and co-workers of the Department of Computational Intelligence and Systems Science at Tokyo Institute of Technology, together with researchers across Japan, have shown that simpler versions of the universal genetic code -- created by knocking out certain amino acids -- can still function efficiently and accurately in protein synthesis. The researchers conducted cell-free experiments altering the genetic code.

All current life forms on Earth have 20 amino acids in their genetic code. However, scientists believe that this was not always the case, and that organisms evolved from simpler genetic codes with fewer amino acids. Amino acids are linked in accordance with codons -- a 3-letter combination of the four base nucleotides (G, A, T and C) in a genetic code. There are 64 possible codons, and so most amino acids are produced by several different codons, except for tryptophan and methionine, which are generated by just one codon each. Tryptophan is thought to be the most recent amino acid to become part of the universal genetic code.

Kiga and his team took the codon for tryptophan, and reassigned it to code for the amino acid alanine instead. They discovered the resulting simplified code could still generate proteins as before. The researchers also reassigned another codon originally for the amino acid cysteine and replaced it with serine. This simplified code without cysteine was able to synthesize an active enzyme.

By knocking out individual amino acids and observing the effects, scientists will be able to understand how early primordial organisms may have functioned and evolved. There are also numerous applications for simplified genetic codes in laboratory experiments and clinical trials.

Before emergence of the current universal genetic code, primitive organisms that may have used only 19 amino acids could benefit from horizontal gene transfer, where cells transfer genetic material between one another. This is a key method used by bacteria to develop resistance to drugs. An organism with the current universal genetic code for 20 amino acids would have competitive advantages in its ability to synthesize proteins, but could not engage in genetic transfer with the rest of the population. Only when a suitably large gene pool of organisms with 20 amino acids is available could horizontal transfer occur between these life forms and they could then thrive. This implies that organisms with a simpler genetic code could be used as a barrier in laboratory experiments, preventing new genetically modified strains from escaping to the natural world.

Ron Paul on Romney: ?I don?t fully endorse him?

Ron Paul (T.J. Kirkpatrick/Getty Images)

TAMPA -- Mitt Romney's presidential campaign gave Texas Rep. Ron Paul a chance to speak at the Republican National Convention, but he declined due to the conditions of the offer, the New York Times reports:

Mr. Paul, in an interview, said convention planners had offered him an opportunity to speak under two conditions: that he deliver remarks vetted by the Romney campaign, and that he give a full-fledged endorsement of Mr. Romney. He declined.

"It wouldn't be my speech," Mr. Paul said. "That would undo everything I've done in the last 30 years. I don't fully endorse him for president."

Republicans plan to show a tribute video honoring the the retiring libertarian politician Tuesday at the convention. Paul is also holding his own rally nearby on Sunday afternoon.

AP Interview: Obama on Romney's 'extreme' views

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama said Mitt Romney has locked himself into "extreme positions" on economic and social issues and would surely impose them if elected, trying to discredit his Republican rival at the biggest political moment of his life.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Obama said Romney lacks serious ideas, refuses to "own up" to the responsibilities of what it takes to be president, and deals in factually dishonest arguments that could soon haunt him in face-to-face debates.

Obama also offered a glimpse of how he would govern in a second term of divided government, insisting rosily that the forces of the election would help break Washington's stalemate. He said he would be willing to make a range of compromises with Republicans, confident there are some who would rather make deals than remain part of "one of the least productive Congresses in American history."

With the remarks, Obama set up a contrast between Romney, whom he cast as an extremist pushing staunchly conservative policies, and himself, by saying he would work across party lines. It was a seeming play for the independent voters who decide close elections and tell pollsters they want to see the often-gridlocked politicians in Washington solve the nation's problems.

Mainly, Obama was intent on countering Romney even before his challenger got to the Republican National Convention, which starts Monday in Tampa, Fla. In doing so, the president depicted his opponent as having accumulated ideas far outside the mainstream with no room to turn back.

"I can't speak to Governor Romney's motivations," Obama said. "What I can say is that he has signed up for positions, extreme positions, that are very consistent with positions that a number of House Republicans have taken. And whether he actually believes in those or not, I have no doubt that he would carry forward some of the things that he's talked about."

Obama spoke to the AP on Thursday before heading off to a long weekend with his family at Camp David, the secluded presidential retreat in the Maryland mountains.

The president was at ease but doggedly on script, steering even personal-themed questions about Romney and running mate Paul Ryan into answers about starkly different visions for helping the middle class.

Romney, a successful former executive of a private equity firm and one-time Massachusetts governor, will introduce himself to a TV audience of millions next Thursday as he takes the convention stage to accept his party's presidential nomination. He has offered himself as a business-minded alternative to Obama and has seized on voter concerns about joblessness and the direction of the nation.

Nearly ten weeks before Election Day, the race is remarkably stable and reflective of a sharply divided nation, with registered voters about evenly split on their choice and nearly a quarter of them unsure or still willing to change their mind. Across the interview, Obama's messages often seemed directed at moderate and independent voters whose sway could make the difference.

Obama's depiction of a Romney presidency grew most pointed when he was asked if his Republican challenger has no core, as one of Obama's top advisers once put it.

The president suggested that whatever Romney really stands for in life is secondary to the promises Romney has made in the campaign.

In explaining his accusation of "extreme" positions, the president cited Romney's call for across-the-board tax cuts that Obama said would mostly help the rich at the expense of everyone else and cost the nation $5 trillion. Obama singled out Romney's opposition to tax credits for producers of wind energy, the kind of issue that carries large political resonance in a battleground state such as Iowa.

And Obama alluded to the provocative issue of abortion, suddenly thrust to the fore this week when Republican Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin said the female body has a way to "shut that whole thing down" when a woman is the victim of "legitimate rape."

The Republican platform in Tampa calls for a ban on abortion with no specific exceptions for rape or other circumstances. Obama predicted that a President Romney would not "stand in the way" if Congress gave him a bill that stripped away women's control over their reproductive health.

Romney is on record, however, as not opposing abortion in cases of rape and incest or if it will save the mother's life.

Polling shows social issues such as abortion represent perhaps Obama's best opportunity to draw support from Romney. Obama already holds a broad lead as the candidate more trusted to handle those social issues among Democrats and independents. The issue is one of Romney's biggest vulnerabilities among moderate and liberal Republicans.

Obama also sought to chip away at Romney's trustworthiness, taking fresh shots at Romney's refusal to release years of tax returns for public inspection. He said that position was indicative of a candidate who has a "lack of willingness to take responsibility for what this job entails."

Yet it is the economy that has driven this election and has dominated Obama's message of a middle-class revival.

"We aren't where we need to be. Everybody agrees with that," said Obama, who inherited an economy in free fall and now bears responsibility for a recovery that remains weak. "But Governor Romney's policies would make things worse for middle-class families and offer no prospect for long-term opportunity for those striving to get into the middle class," the president said.

A Romney spokesman, Ryan Williams, jumped on Obama's account in the interview that the economy clearly needs to get better. "Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan agree," Williams said. "The American people know they aren't better off than they were four years ago."

Obama holds a decisive advantage over Romney when Americans are asked who better understands their daily woes. Yet nearly two-thirds of people in a new AP-GfK poll say the economy is in poor shape, and 60 percent say the country is headed in the wrong direction.

Obama expressed confidence that even voters whose lives have not improved during his term will stick with him as they assess the two candidates.

"If they saw Gov. Romney offering serious proposals that offered some sort of concrete ways in which middle-class families would be helped, then I could understand them thinking about that choice," Obama said. "But that's not what's happening."

And therein lies the central case that Obama made in the interview, as he has made for months, and as he will again at his own party's convention in Charlotte, N.C., in early September.

Obama said he is the candidate whose policies have historically helped the middle class on issues that people care about and that shape the economy ? education, manufacturing, science and research, Medicare, debt reduction, tax rates, health care, consumer protection, college aid, energy.

Williams, the Romney spokesman, responded that Obama has piled up national debt and presided over high unemployment. "Too many middle-class families are going to sleep each night worried," he said. "This may be the best President Obama can do, but it's not the best America can do."

The moment that could finally shake up a close race could come in the three debates Obama and Romney hold in October. The president said Romney could run into trouble because of arguments that are not backed up by facts, citing a widely debunked television ad campaign in which Romney accuses Obama of gutting the work requirement in the federal welfare law.

"It will be a little tougher to defend face-to-face," Obama said.

Obama's view of a different second-term dynamic in Washington, even if both and House Republicans retain power, seems a stretch given the stalemated politics of a divided government. He said two changes ? the facts that "the American people will have voted," and that Republicans will no longer need to be focused on beating him ? could lead to better conditions for deal-making.

If Republicans are willing, Obama said, "I'm prepared to make a whole range of compromises" that could even rankle his own party. But he did not get specific.

The 25-minute interview, conducted in the library of the White House residence, was part of a multi-faceted campaign by Obama's team to snag some of the spotlight during Romney's big week. Obama denied the notion, widely if quietly held in political circles, that the fiercely competitive president is also driven to beat Romney because he does not hold him in high regard.

"I don't really know him well," Obama said. "The big arguments that I have with Governor Romney have to do with where we take this country forward."

A faulty control fin prevented it from starting its exotic scramjet engine and it was lost.

Submitted on 08/17/12, 08:59 AM

LOS ANGELES - An unmanned experimental aircraft failed during an attempt to fly at six times the speed of sound in the latest setback for hypersonic flight.

The X-51A Waverider was designed to reach Mach 6, or 3,600 mph, after being dropped by a B-52 bomber off the Southern California coast on Tuesday. Engineers hoped it would sustain its top speed for five minutes, twice as long as an X-51A has gone before.

But the Air Force said Wednesday that a faulty control fin prevented it from starting its exotic scramjet engine and it was lost.

"It is unfortunate that a problem with this subsystem caused a termination before we could light the scramjet engine," Charlie Brink of the Air Force Research Laboratory at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, said in a statement.

The Waverider successfully detached from the B-52 and fired the rocket booster as planned. Then its scramjet engine was supposed to take over as it attempted to climb to Mach 6. But that never happened. Fifteen seconds after separating from the rocket booster, the Waverider lost control, preventing a test of the scramjet engine.

"All our data showed we had created the right conditions for engine ignition and we were very hopeful to meet our test objectives," Brink said.

The Pentagon has been testing hypersonic technologies in hopes of delivering strikes around the globe within minutes.

It was the latest failure for the Waverider program. A test flight last year ended prematurely with an X-51A trying to restart its engine until it plunged into the Pacific Ocean.

During the first flight of an X-51A in 2010, it reached near five times the speed of sound for three minutes.

There's only one X-51A vehicle left. The Air Force has not decided whether it will fly.

Facebook stock near half of public offering value

(AP) ? Facebook's stock has come a penny short of hitting $19 for the first time, meaning it has nearly lost half of its market value since its public offering in May.

It hit $19.01 on Friday, a day after the expiration of a lock-up period that has provided some early investors and insiders with an opportunity to exit.

Investors have been concerned about Facebook's ability to keep increasing revenue and make money from its growing mobile audience, even as many analysts hold positive long-term views.

The stock closed on its first day barely above its initial public offering price of $38. It has been below that level since.

The stock fell to $19.01 before bouncing back to $19.17 in morning trading Friday. That's 70 cents, or 3.5 percent, below Thursday's close.

The Legal View: Legal maneuvering on both sides as judge cancels ...

By Jeff Trexler

joe shuster The Legal View: Legal maneuvering on both sides as judge cancels Superman hearing
[On Monday, US District judge Otis Wright cancelled a hearing on the case of the Joe Shuster estate's claim for his half of the copyright to Superman. This led many observers to think a decision was near. The Beat's legal expert, Jeff Trexler explains it's just not that simple.]

When a judge agrees to decide a matter on the filings, it often means that the matter is considered to be a clear call. Reading the tea leaves, DC filed for the motion to have the hearing taken off calendar, and the fact that the judge consented could be taken as a sign that things look good for DC. Of course, it could also go the other way. The reason the judge cancelled could also be that he thinks the documentation on this case is so thorough that this hearing would have been a waste of time. Things will likely be a bit clearer, of course, when Judge Wright issues his ruling.

As for the timing, the ruling may be near or may not. It?s an easy guess to think that it is near, not just because of the decision to decide on the briefs but also because it?s August. Late August/early September is when the new law clerks start. If the clerk assigned to the case is leaving, the judge (not to mention the clerk) would most likely prefer to have it off the desk before the clerk most familiar with the matter disappears. Of course, district court clerks can have two year terms, so unlike, say, federal appellate courts, where the norm for all terms is one year, it is conceivable that Judge Wright and his Pacific Pictures clerk might not be facing this time crunch.

What most surprised me about the cancellation of the hearing was not the fact of it ? this one does seem to be decidable on the filings, and even if his clerks aren?t leaving it?s August and the beach is calling.

Or at least it was for Marc Toberoff, whose vacation plans for the day of the hearing were the reason that DC cited as grounds for taking the hearing off the calendar. DC?s motion is a wonderful piece of frenemy gamesmanship ? DC is only being helpful to Marc Toberoff, you know, when it tells the judge that Toberoff thinks a family frolic and a September appearance in New York are way more important than showing up in this case.

Subtly twisting the knife, DC doesn?t ask straight out for a decision on the filings, nor does it tout the strength of its case. Rather, it slyly ?defers to the Court if and when a hearing should be scheduled.?

All in all, it looks like another strategic miscue for the Pacific Pictures team. Yes, attorneys do go on vacation, and they even use it as a reason to move hearings dates. But in a case of this magnitude, with Toberoff?s filings taking a stridency that sounds so much like a comment screed the only thing missing is caps lock, the idea that he?d skip this supposedly landmark Superman hearing in favor of vay-cay and the Mad Myth Mysteries makes his theatric moral outrage seem ridiculous.

Judging from DC?s reference to Toberoff?s plan to file a cross-motion for partial summary judgment sometime in September or October, it appears that Toberoff was hoping to delay a negative ruling until he could score a few points of his own. It didn?t work.

Samsung starts US sales of Galaxy Note 10.1

(AP) ? Samsung Electronics Co. is taking another shot at the dominance of Apple's iPad with a tablet equipped with a digital pen and a faster processor at the same price tag.

The Wi-Fi only version of the Galaxy Note 10.1 will go on sale in the U.S. from Thursday. The price starts at $499 for the basic model with 16 GB storage and $549 for the 32 GB model, expandable with an external memory card.

Apple's latest iPad starts at the same price but the Note 10.1 offers some features that the iPad doesn't have, while its screen resolution is lower than the iPad's. It is Samsung's first Android tablet equipped with a digital pen and can run two applications side-by-side on a screen divided in half.

The split screen, made possible by the quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM, can be useful when taking notes while watching a video or surfing the Internet.

Analysts said this capability of the Note tablet is intended to attract business and education customers, a strategy that could be more effective than going all out against the iPad, which already dominates nearly 70 percent of the worldwide tablet market.

Samsung released about a half dozen Android tablets in the last two years under the Galaxy Tab series but none of them has been as popular as the iPad. Analysts say Android tablets are less successful because of a dearth of applications and higher prices.

But with the Note 10.1, the South Korean company believes it has a product that will find favor with corporations and schools despite the iPad's rich pool of applications and sharper screen.

While Apple makes one new model for the iPhone and iPad every year to meet demand from all around the world, Samsung releases multiple mobile products with variations in prices, screen sizes, hardware and operating systems.

This strategy helped Samsung edge pass Apple in smartphone sales but hasn't paid off in the tablet area, probably because Samsung's previous tablets were not differentiated enough from the iPad. Samsung's second-quarter market share in the global tablet market fell to 9 percent, while nearly seven out of 10 tablets in the market were emblazoned with Apple logo, according to IHS iSuppli.

Analysts say they see how multitasking, the note-taking feature and other tasks that can be done with the digital pen can help differentiate the Galaxy Note 10.1 from the iPad, something that may grab the attention of professional artists, educators and businesses if these features are executed smoothly.

"I think the video on the left and note-taking on the right half of the screen can be widely used for educational purposes," said Lee Sei-cheol, a technology analyst at Meritz Securities.

Samsung has improved the pressure-sensitive pen to make it feel more natural and accurate since the "S Pen" digital pen was first introduced with the Galaxy Note last year. The unexpected success of the 5.3-inch hybrid of a smartphone and a tablet emboldened Samsung to further explore the digital pen features.

There are also some 30 applications for sketching and note taking as well as Adobe Photoshop Touch and games where S Pen comes in handier than touching the screen. Samsung plans to expand the list of applications that support multitasking, which is currently limited to six, an official said.

Other features indicate that Samsung developed the products with the education and corporate markets in sight. The updated S Note app can recognize handwritten math formula, geometric shapes, English alphabets and Chinese characters, allowing the digital pen to function as an input device in the absence of a physical keyboard.

"The S Pen offers both active content creation as well as passive content consumption," President of Samsung Electronics America Tim Baxter said in a statement.

In South Korea, Samsung has already started going after enterprise clients and schools with the Galaxy Note 10.1 and the company has not released the product for consumers.

Samsung Life Insurance and its affiliated insurance company Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance began handing out the Note 10.1 for sales people who are ditching large stacks of paper for the tablet.

Samsung also said it will donate nearly 600 Note tablets to eight South Korean schools for educational use. South Korea is rolling out a $2 billion project to replace paper books with digital texts.

New nanoparticles shrink tumors in mice

ScienceDaily (Aug. 15, 2012) ? By sequencing cancer-cell genomes, scientists have discovered vast numbers of genes that are mutated, deleted or copied in cancer cells. This treasure trove is a boon for researchers seeking new drug targets, but it is nearly impossible to test them all in a timely fashion.

To help speed up the process, MIT researchers have developed RNA-delivering nanoparticles that allow for rapid screening of new drug targets in mice. In their first mouse study, done with researchers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Broad Institute, they showed that nanoparticles that target a protein known as ID4 can shrink ovarian tumors.

The nanoparticle system, described in the Aug. 15 online edition of Science Translational Medicine, could relieve a significant bottleneck in cancer-drug development, says Sangeeta Bhatia, the John and Dorothy Wilson Professor of Health Sciences and Technology and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and a member of the David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT.

"What we did was try to set forth a pipeline where you start with all of the targets that are pouring out of genomics, and you sequentially filter them through a mouse model to figure out which ones are important. By doing that, you can prioritize the ones you want to target clinically using RNA interference, or develop drugs against," says Bhatia, one of the paper's senior authors.

William Hahn, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and the paper's other senior author, is the leader of Project Achilles, a collaborative effort to identify promising new targets for cancer drugs from the flood of data coming from the National Cancer Institute's cancer-genome-sequencing project.

Among those potential targets are many considered to be "undruggable," meaning that the proteins don't have any pockets where a traditional drug could bind to them. The new nanoparticles, which deliver short strands of RNA that can shut off a particular gene, may help scientists go after those undruggable proteins.

"If we could figure out how to make this work [in humans], it would open up a whole new class of targets that hadn't been available," says Hahn, who is also director of the Center for Cancer Genome Discovery at Dana-Farber and a senior associate member of the Broad Institute.

Lead authors of the paper are Yin Ren, an MD/PhD student in Bhatia's lab, and Hiu Wing Cheung, a postdoc in Hahn's lab.

An abundance of targets

Through Project Achilles, Hahn and his colleagues have been testing the functions of many of the genes disrupted in ovarian cancer cells. By revealing genes critical to cancer-cell survival, this approach has narrowed the list of potential targets to several dozen.

Typically, the next step in identifying a good drug target would be to genetically engineer a strain of mice that are missing (or overexpressing) the gene in question, to see how they respond when tumors develop. However, this normally takes two to four years. A much faster way to study these genes would be simply to turn them off after a tumor appears.

RNA interference (RNAi) offers a promising way to do that. During this naturally occurring phenomenon, short strands of RNA bind to the messenger RNA (mRNA) that delivers protein-building instructions from the cell's nucleus to the rest of the cell. Once bound, the mRNA molecules are destroyed and their corresponding proteins never get made.

Scientists have been pursuing RNAi as a cancer treatment since its discovery in the late 1990s, but have had trouble finding a way to safely and effectively target tumors with this therapy. Of particular difficulty was finding a way to get RNA to penetrate tumors.

Bhatia's lab, which has been working on RNAi delivery for several years, joined forces with Hahn's group to identify and test new drug targets. Their goal was to create a "mix and dose" technique that would allow researchers to mix up RNA-delivery particles that target a particular gene, inject them into mice and see what happens.

Shrinking tumors

In their first effort, the researchers decided to focus on the ID4 protein because it is overexpressed in about a third of high-grade ovarian tumors (the most aggressive kind), but not in other cancer types. The gene, which codes for a transcription factor, appears to be involved in embryonic development: It gets shut down early in life, then somehow reactivates in ovarian tumors.

To target ID4, Bhatia and her students designed a new type of RNA-delivering nanoparticle. Their particles can both target and penetrate tumors, something that had never before been achieved with RNA interference.

On their surface, the particles are tagged with a short protein fragment that allows them to enter tumor cells. Those fragments are also drawn to a protein found on tumor cells, known as p32. This fragment and many similar ones were discovered by Erkki Ruoslahti, a professor at the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute at the University of California at Santa Barbara, who is also an author of the new paper.

Within the nanoparticles, strands of RNA are mixed with a protein that further helps them along their journey: When the particles enter a cell, they are encapsulated in membranes known as endosomes. The protein-RNA mixture can cross the endosomal membrane, allowing the particles to get into the cell's main compartment and start breaking down mRNA.

In a study of mice with ovarian tumors, the researchers found that treatment with the RNAi nanoparticles eliminated most of the tumors.

The researchers are now using the particles to test other potential targets for ovarian cancer as well as other types of cancer, including pancreatic cancer. They are also looking into the possibility of developing the ID4-targeting particles as a treatment for ovarian cancer.

PFT: Urlacher has knee surgery, status uncertain

Kevin Demoff, Les SneadAP

After the Rams announced on Monday the decision to scrap a plan to play London home games in 2013 and 2014, MDS astutely pointed out that the Rams may have given on that point now in order to make it easier for the Rams to point a finger at the Convention and Visitors Commission later.

Rams COO Kevin Demoff, in an appearance on The Morning After on 590 The Fan in St. Louis, disputed the notion that there?s a deeper agenda to the reduction of the London inventory from three homes games to one.

In so doing, he paid us a compliment.? We think.

?I think everybody will try to find hidden meanings in anything in the world, and ProFootballTalk is especially good at that,? Demoff said.? ?[PFT] covers the NFL very well and takes a different perspective, which is why they generate so many page views.? But I think to try to find hidden meaning in this ? we didn?t go to the CVC and say, ?We?re gonna pull this two games back, what do you think?? Or what?s the challenge??? We made this decision with the NFL in order that we could focus on this process.? And I think for anybody to look far beyond ?the timing was wrong? is looking for something that?s not in play.?

But what does it mean to ?focus on the process??? It reasonably could mean that the Rams realized that playing the games in London could have a major impact on the P.R. portion of the process, which when dealing with pro sports franchises necessarily is a big part of any process in which the team is involved.

Indeed, in the inherently complex game of public relations involving a general public that may not have the time or inclination to study the nuances, the idea that the Rams made a fan-friendly move will resonate throughout the process of getting the stadium into the top 25 percent of all venues in the league, as required by the team?s lease.? If the Rams had followed through on the plans to export one regular-season game per year to London for each of the next three years, it would have been harder to get the fans to focus on the situation from the team?s perspective:? The CVC agreed in 1995 to a procedure for putting the Rams in a first-tier stadium by 2015, and the failure to make that happen will be the result of a decision by the CVC, not the Rams.

And so, if the CVC ultimately decides not to implement the final ruling of a panel of arbitrators who?ll determine what it will take to make the Edward Jones Dome a first-tier stadium, the Rams will have to decide whether to pull the plug on their lease after the 2014 season and potentially relocate.? By positioning the fan base to blame an ultimate move not on the Rams but on the CVC, the CVC has less cover for looking at the final decision from the arbitration and saying, ?No thanks.?

There?s also a chance that the decision to scuttle the two London games came not from the P.R. department but from legal.? With three neutral arbitrators soon determining what it will take to make the stadium a first-tier venue, the Rams have now slammed the door on the possibility that the CVC would try to taint (yes, Beavis, I said ?taint?) the panel by arguing that the Rams are lobbying for renovations so extensive and expensive in the hopes of a ruling that the CVC will be unable to accept, which then will open the door for a move to Los Angeles.? Or to London.? Or to anywhere but St. Louis.

We don?t expect Demoff to admit that there?s a strategy more intricate than ?the timing was wrong,? especially since Demoff and the rest of the organization are smart enough to have realized that ?the timing was wrong? before deciding to play one home game per year in London for each of what could be the final three years of the team?s lease.

The Rams and the CVC currently are playing high-stakes poker at the highest level of pro sports.? When it comes to Monday?s announcement, there?s got to be something more than something that was obvious before the decision to play three home games in London was made.
